poynterama Posted September 17, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've just had a thought having checked out the Deep Freeze thread How cold is too cold for film storage? I have access to a -20oC freezer at work and could store film there but is -20 too cold? (for the record I normally keep it in the fridge)

andybarton Posted September 17, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 17, 2008 -20degC is fine provided you let it thaw out slowly when you want to use it. All my film is in our domestic -18degC freezer.
moikle Posted September 17, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 17, 2008 Interestingly, Kodak on their data sheets state that only one hour at room temperature is sufficient to thaw a film from those temperatures. I personally leave it just a bit longer. Mike
fotohuis Posted September 17, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 17, 2008 Going up in temperature is going very quick however you have the chance for some condensate, which can be a problem. My critiqual films are stored at -10 degrees C which is more economical, environmental friendly and less electricity consuming but I have a seperate freezer for the films...... Michael Hiles Posted September 17, 2008 Share #5 Posted September 17, 2008 -20degC is fine provided you let it thaw out slowly when you want to use it. All my film is in our domestic -18degC freezer. Might add that the film should defrost in a sealed container - the little film cans are fine. The point is to eliminate any chance for condensation on the film, which would be disasterous. In that context, I would underscore Andy's "thaw out slowly" caution. Michael
