robsteve Posted September 16, 2008 Share #21 Posted September 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Andy: Unless you can get a second camera with a warranty, you may be better off just paying to repair yours, as the camera you buy may suffer the same problem six months from now. It seems expensive, but I was told the R8 was modular and they replace the whole mirror box, not just the cells. BTW, was the quote in Euros or Pounds? Advertisement Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Hi robsteve, Take a look here Alternative options for R8 service?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sdai Posted September 16, 2008 Share #22 Posted September 16, 2008 I agree with Rob here, any service done by Kindermann is also covered by 1 year warranty. It must be similar in the UK too.
Overgaard Posted September 16, 2008 Share #23 Posted September 16, 2008 Thorsten, why do you use two hands to shift the program dial? It is: left hand thumb pushes button, index finger shifts dial. It's a precision instrument and it requires my full attention, as well as all my fingers, to operate such a precious equipment ;-) No, you're right. But actually, often I'm in such awkward positions that I in fact use two hands. It's much easier without, as with the R8. I regularly check all buttons and positions, so I don't like locks on buttons, aperture, on/off switches and stuff...
Overgaard Posted September 16, 2008 Share #24 Posted September 16, 2008 Andy:BTW, was the quote in Euros or Pounds? I had the same question. If in Euro, I would find it reasonable, but if Pounds not. It's a 25-30% difference, but nevertheless important. Somehow. I feel the same about repair; that I prefer to have my "own" equipment repaired. rob_x2004 Posted September 16, 2008 Share #25 Posted September 16, 2008 It says replace electronics so the whole lot is probably 2yr warrantied, not just the meter circuitry. If that is the case 450 anything, pounds included doesnt sound harsh. Why not ask them?
Shootist Posted September 17, 2008 Share #26 Posted September 17, 2008 This is the quote. It's the lightmeter that went dead on the R8, and this is the result. Still trying to stay positive, but if R9 meters go too (IIRC, Robsteve had one go too) then there's a generic fault with it, that means it can happen again. Andy I think the main problem hear is Leica does not do just one repair. They rework the whole Camera/Lens back to specs, or as close to it as can be done. So the cost of just the meter may be about 150-200 of that estimate. It like taking a Ferrari/Mercedes/whatever expensive car in for a oil change and it is missing on one cylinder. The dealer will do all the needed repairs or nothing. If you can afford the car/camera you can afford the repairs, that's how they think.

andybarton Posted September 17, 2008 Author Share #28 Posted September 17, 2008 It says replace electronics so the whole lot is probably 2yr warrantied, not just the meter circuitry. If that is the case 450 anything, pounds included doesnt sound harsh. Why not ask them? I spoke to Leica UK, and "replace electronics" is a pretty meaningless phrase to them. Could mean anything. No one mentioned a two year warranty last time it went back to them, and there's no mention of one this time. This isn't a Volvo. I have already asked them to return the faulty camera to me.
