haribo Posted September 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not sure if posted already ... here it goes anyway... Just received a newsletter from a German Leica dealer (Meister). After introducing the new M8.2, faster lenses and some other stuff, he finishes the email saying this: >> Nur so viel darf ich verraten: Es wird ein neues Kamerasystem sein, welches unter dem Code-Wort AFRika geführt wird. << my quick translation ... " i can tell only this right now: there will be a new camera system, code name AFRika". According to Dr. Kaufmann (CEO Leica Camera AG) "a system which will live up to the needs of professional digital photography in the 21st century. Handy like a DSLR, high resolution like a studio camera. (medium size???) With a processor never be seen before, and lenses like never been available before." haribo (Harald Benz)

carstenw Posted September 15, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 15, 2008 I also heard this today, and this is a new system. Leica is making absolutely everything for it, except the sensor, and the manufacturer of the sensor is not known yet. This is the camera which some call the S2, although the name is not known. This is *not* the follow-up to the R system. There will be another R, but later. Apparently Leica will reveal the direction of the R system at Photokina, but no R10 yet. mjh Posted September 15, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 15, 2008 the manufacturer of the sensor is not known yet. There’s the usual suspect, though.

adan Posted September 16, 2008 Share #8 Posted September 16, 2008 So is AFRika, or the S2, or the R10, actually going to be revealed in some form or stage at photokina? More press releases NEXT Monday? Mockups, Roadmaps, etc.? Leica supposedly doubled the size of their Halle booth over 2006 - that space can't be just for the 21/24 Lux and the Nocti, can it (even as big as they are!)? atournas Posted September 16, 2008 Share #9 Posted September 16, 2008 Ok, what I was told a couple of days ago from an official Leica representative is that Leica has prepared a what they call "Africa Room" for Photokina. I had decided not to reveal the info before the event, but now... Anyway, it sounds like a setting for the introduction of a pro system. Paul
LUF Admin Posted September 16, 2008 Share #10 Posted September 16, 2008 Hi, I have an invitation to a special event on Monday evening (photokina eve...). If everything runs asI plan it right now, I'll keep you informed during the event. I'll send out a newsletter later this week with a precise announcement. andybarton Posted September 16, 2008 Share #11 Posted September 16, 2008 Good news Direct from the "horse's mouth" as we say (Not sure if that translates, very well, but it means "direct from the source"!)

Ruhayat Posted September 16, 2008 Share #15 Posted September 16, 2008 Whoa. Lenses like never been seen before and sensor like never been made before? I like the sound of that! Might have to sell the car AND the house to get it, though.
leicaman94044 Posted September 16, 2008 Share #16 Posted September 16, 2008 The AFRica room may be used to showcase the new Pradovit D-1200 projector. The question is, how do you sell a projector that comes in at $13,950 to any but large corporations with deep pockets?
sdai Posted September 16, 2008 Share #17 Posted September 16, 2008 $13950 a pop for a decent home theater projector supporting 1080i is quite reasonable IMO. Comparable Sony projectors will cost the same price or even more.
Iron Flatline Posted September 16, 2008 Share #18 Posted September 16, 2008 Andreas, I'll see you there on Monday. I got the invite, too EDIT: ... and I am excited as a little school girl... I have NO idea what is coming...
jackal Posted September 16, 2008 Share #19 Posted September 16, 2008 H3D31 and the new integrated Sinar come in at 9500 GBP + vat given that they are established, trusted players already in this field... any Leica pro MF kit (with one starter lens) will need to come in significantly cheaper than that. If it any more than this then I really will be splitting my sides with laughter. The pricing of digital equipment, especially of the large sensor variety, seems to have turned a big corner this year and my guess is that once we know the full nikon & canon news at Photokina, this idea will be consolidated further. Leica pricing seems to have turned a corner too... but strangely in the wrong direction !
