boilerdoc Posted September 10, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 10, 2008 This reminds me of the old Ektar 25 film which was amazing! I'm ready for a superb quality color neg film! Coolscan is warmed up and ready! If it's half as good as the TMax-2 B&W I'll be happy. Steve
PATB Posted September 10, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 10, 2008 I was going to say I love Kodak, until I saw the part where the Kodak 400UC is going to be discontinued KODAK PROFESSIONAL EKTAR 100 Film: Questions and Answers "Does the announcement of EKTAR 100 Film impact any other films? Yes. EKTAR 100 Film will replace KODAK PROFESSIONAL ULTRA COLOR Film / 100UC. And based on the superior performance and very positive response to our new PORTRA 400NC and VC Films, KODAK PROFESSIONAL ULTRA COLOR Film / 400UC will also be removed from the portfolio by year end 2008." adan Posted September 11, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted September 11, 2008 I never got a chance to try the Ektar 25 - it had gone by the time I started playing with color neg as more "scannable" than silver or slides. I did try the original Ektar 100 or 125 and liked it a lot, but it also vanished with months. Kodak SAYS this 100 equals the old 25. The handwriting was on the wall for 400UC when 100UC disappeared. Any comments on Kodak's belief that the VC/NC Portra 400 films surpass it anyway?
mym6is12 Posted September 11, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 11, 2008 I never got a chance to try the Ektar 25 - it had gone by the time I started playing with color neg ...Kodak SAYS this 100 equals the old 25. Ektar 25 was exceptionally good - I used to get grain free 8"x10" from minox negatives Kodak says this new film also has more dynamic range - I'm really looking forward to trying it. analog-photo Posted September 11, 2008 Share #7 Posted September 11, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) The handwriting was on the wall for 400UC when 100UC disappeared. Any comments on Kodak's belief that the VC/NC Portra 400 films surpass it anyway? I've been using Portra VC for more than a year, both 160 and 400, and find them outstanding. Previously I mostly used Kodak Elite Pro-films, so I really can't compare with the Ektar serie. Lars Ekberg
pelikan1931 Posted September 13, 2008 Share #8 Posted September 13, 2008 the UC400 has more contrast and color saturation than the VC400, but how can ektar 100 replace UC400? that is beyond me.
erl Posted September 14, 2008 Share #9 Posted September 14, 2008 I remember the old Ektar 25. I couldn't wear sox when I used it. It always blew them off! ;) Looking forward to anything of that ilk with anticipation. Must get the old Blad & tripod out for a trot around the sights when the new film hits. adan Posted September 14, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted September 14, 2008 Must get the old Blad & tripod out for a trot around the sights when the new film hits. Alas - 35mm only, at the moment. I know, I know. Even as a digital shooter, that peeves me. I HATE discrimination! Might dig out my M4-2 body and take off the IR filters to try it, though. (Pelikan: No, no. Kodak says the VC/NC400 films replace 400UC - the Ektar 100 is to replace slide film for those who can't find local processing anymore
abrewer Posted September 16, 2008 Share #11 Posted September 16, 2008 I'm keen to try this film as I was a huge fan of 100 UC and 400 UC Is anyone able to pre-order it at B&H or Adorama yet? Thanks Allan

That is interesting. I wonder how Kodak figures it will be possible to project the negs. Around my area for 100 miles there is no photolab other than the big-box and drugstore chains, and even they send all film out someplace because there isn't enough daily demand to keep refreshing the chemicals. For me, E6 is no harder to find than C41: the nearest mailbox.
bull40 Posted October 8, 2008 Share #13 Posted October 8, 2008 Allan (and all), I was able to place a pre-order at Adorama today. Not in stock yet, but will be soon. At that point they will charge me and ship. I did not see the film available or pre-orderable at B&H, yet. I too am greatly anticipating shooting with this- sounds great. The new Tmax 400 is just incredible stuff. I've shot it from 100-400 asa and it's sharp as hell, fine grain and wonderful control of highlights. It's the first 400asa film I've found that doesn't look like granite when processed in Rodinal! I've been shooting it right next to ACROS and frankly the grain difference is small enough not to be noticed in prints up to 10x. Best wishes Dan

fotografr Posted October 9, 2008 Share #18 Posted October 9, 2008 The Ektar 25 was my all time favorite film. I froze a couple of bricks of it back in the 1990s and just shot my last roll a couple of years ago. This could make me put my M8 down for awhile and start shooting film again. The Ektar 25 scanned fabulously.
Dan States Posted October 9, 2008 Share #19 Posted October 9, 2008 I hope that guy who wants to shoot in a nightclub reads this, Dan I've got to try it again since they changed; didn't care for it last time I used (maybe 3-4 years now) Yeah, I always thought the old Tmax 400 was crap because the highlights ran wild so easily and it always had an unnatural tonal scale (to me). The new stuff is worlds different. In fact if they were really shrewd they would have changed the name. Try some at 250 asa in the developer of your choice and I'll wager you will love the results. The old blank shadows and blasted whites are gone and the resolution is stunning. If the new Ektar shows the same kind of improvements they will have me back for color as well.
