Not only to see the latest from Leica and try out their new products, but in general. I've been to conferences like CES before and found them only mildly interesting at best. Seems that Koeln is a pretty expensive place to stay and I'm guessing that its because of the conferences. Keep in mind I'm travelling to Europe on vacation and was thinking of spending three days in the city including at photokina. thanks Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Great food and places to visit, plus it home of Kôlsch :-).I agree, it is rather expensive during photokina. The show itself is huge, much bigger than CES. Other than all the hooplah surrounding the new hardware, the Leica booth and others, the visual gallery with it's multitude of exhibitions is a feast for the eyes. If you love photography it's a great way to not only see the latest equipment but it is also a wonderful place to be exposed to the European community. You probably don't refer to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas? I would guess it is larger than the whole of Cologne... But then, you can't drink beer from test tubes in Vegas. CES is indeed huge and a better comparison is the Cebit in Hannover. I go there for an (exhausting) day. So much to see ranging from the majors to the guys in raincoats taking pictures of the naked models. Spare parts for film processing machines? Photokina's the place to be. Nice chill-out areas with Wi-Fi - in 2006, I took a laptop to upload images to this site. Cheap to get to from the UK; my airfare was less than the taxi ride from the airport. See you there? But without any interesting thing to see/play with, what's the point? You guys could get some "DMR rocks" car magnets or bumper stickers, put them on ebay and I'll buy it. I didn't stay in Koln, but upriver in Koblenz and took the train in to see photokina. The rest of the time I was visiting wineries and wine shops along the Mosel. You might be able to mix in a vist to Solms (only an hour or so by slow train), but nearly all the staff will be at photokina anyway. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Cologne is a nice city with a classic cathedral and a fairly good modern art museum, but I certainly wouldn't go way out of my way and spend lots of euros for an industry exhibit. I am returning home from Salem and NY in time to have a good night's rest and visit the Photokina. We live 20 minutes' drive away as well and I will get a rebate as an "elder citizen". Being next door helps and I will probably go more than once to avoid the tiring routine of a one day bout. Leica will be my prime interest but I will also visit several other places because I am interested in scanners to digitalize many of my numerous slides.
