There's a very good photo essay on the closure of the Agfa Leverkusen factory in the July issue of Leica Fotografie which arrived this morning.

Also an interesting survey of the 'future of film' featuring crystal-gazing from representatives of Kodak, Fuji, Ilford Photo, Maco and Gigabit. Seems like monochrome is on the up (or at least experiencing a stabilisation in demand) whilst colour is rapidly heading down the tubes - in Germany demand is down from 197m films in 2001 to 90m in 2005.

There's also an item on the digital M which doesn't tell us anything we don't already know.

Colour heading down the tubes.not for serious photographers it is'nt.

People who in general only shoot their family, kids, pets etc are going digital and I don't blame them as these digicams are so easy to use, very compact, cute and they get excellent results, and thats a huge market out there for these P/S pocket Digital cams.

The old campact Film cameras were still not to compact after all they were designed around the 35mm Film cannister,so size was a limited factor.

The Pros of -course need this new Digital medium as it's quick and they can it back to their newspaper and magazines editors.

Most of the serious amateurs like myself will stick with film, " WHY"

Well most of us know how to use a camera, and get the best results from it.

We tend not to be in a hurry, we enjoy using our equipment and tend to revere our work

to which is very important like Film's longevity and Leica cameras.

So I think Film we stick around for a niche market who are happy with this medium.

The price of Film will go up, but for me and many others it's still worth it and don't care

as long as we can still get it, but if the unthinkable happens I will consider my options,

and most likely go back to digital video and buy a cheap digicam for happy snaps.

Slide Film and Leica for ever.

Cheers.
