wparsonsgisnet Posted August 26, 2008 Share #1 Â Posted August 26, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've had my D2 listed in the buy/sell section and am preparing to remove it. It's worth more than the prices they are fetching. This is a g-r-e-a-t opportunity for photogs to get this great camera. Â I bot mine in when they appeared. Just think of the money I would have saved if I'd waited to get these prices! I'd still have 3/4 of the cost, wouldn't have an Elpro 'cause they're out of stock, and wouldn't need the 4 terabytes of storage I have. Probably would have saved the cost of a couple of printers as well. Â Regards to all.
Advertisement Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Hi wparsonsgisnet, Take a look here D2 prices are great! -- for buyers. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Overgaard Posted August 26, 2008 Share #2 Â Posted August 26, 2008 True, considering all the good things that can be said about that camera, the prices are really great to get one or an extra one.

While your D2 is worth more to you than the prices they are fetching generally, the prices they're fetching are a pretty good indication as to the market's perception of the D2's present value. It's also interesting to note how the gap between the prices of used LC1s and D2s appears to be narrowing somewhat...
wparsonsgisnet Posted August 26, 2008 Author Share #4 Â Posted August 26, 2008 Well, it makes me wonder what the M8 will be worth if an M9 comes and the M8 is not upgradable to a new sensor. Â I still think the world of my D2 -- there is no other SILENT Leica of this quality -- and I expect to continue to be pleased with the M8. But one wonders what obscellence will do to the M8-computer (oops, sorry, camera).
daveleo Posted August 26, 2008 Share #5 Â Posted August 26, 2008 yes, i see a bunch of D2's selling for $800 (US) with replaced sensors. Â my D2 is in for sensor replacement and i waited to hear the bad $$$ news, and i had decided if they wanted much $$$ for the repair, i would not pay for the repair and just add the dead camera to my "retired" camera collection. Â happily they are replacing the sensor for free and that solves my dilemma. Â unfortunately i think the D2 is getting a bad reputation .... people who don't own one ask "isn't that the camera with the bad sensor?" ..... no amount of explaining helps. wparsonsgisnet Posted August 26, 2008 Author Share #6 Â Posted August 26, 2008 If I understand it correctly, Leica is on the hook for free repairs until they say they won't do them anymore. Â Sounds like a bargain to me. Besides, it's a standard sensor (from Sony?)
daveleo Posted August 26, 2008 Share #7 Â Posted August 26, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) yes ... it was suggested on a posting somewhere that Sony is eating the cost of all the sensor replacements.... i think that's probably true and that it is only fair that they do that. Â but its sad that the D2 seems to be "taking the hit" in the marketplace at the moment.... it's images go way beyond what the numbers (CCD size, Megapixels, etc etc etc) suggest. Â in the long run though, i'm imagining that people stop the digital numbers BS and look at the results and the D2 will hold its place among the "classics". Â for sure, it will remain in my collection, even when it stops working !!
Adrian Lord Posted August 26, 2008 Share #8 Â Posted August 26, 2008 The D2 is destined for classic Leica status, of that there is no doubt in my mind. Once you learn to work around the apparent flaws, the images and flexibility are incredible. Buy now - the prices are bottoming out and wont go much lower. I ve tried very hard to concvince myself to get an M8 but just can't justify it when the D2 is so good and the M8 is so costly and arguably more flawed. audidudi Posted August 26, 2008 Share #9 Â Posted August 26, 2008 yes, i see a bunch of D2's selling for $800 (US) with replaced sensors. Â From a seller's perspective, the D2's market value is even lower than that, as I recently bought mine -- factory refurbished, with a new sensor, a 1-year Leica warranty, and in mint condition cosmetically -- for $677 and that was from a dealer, even! Â From a buyer's perspective, of course, they're priceless...

But the ones I see are sold privately and in second hand shops. Would Leica fix it for free if I am not the original owner? I would have gotten one if not for the sensor problem. Too bad Leica does not answer e-mails and my local distributor is clueless.
Overgaard Posted August 27, 2008 Share #11 Â Posted August 27, 2008 The warranty is on the camera and is unlimited as to time period. So any camera, no matter who the owner is, would get repaired anytime. Â The one year warranty is not relevant for a used camera. Either it is broke, or it will continue to work till worn out, and no warranty covers worn out equipment the owner was so happy with he used it every day ;-) Â The time for D2 is now. In 10 years it's a classic but not a camera you would use.
