johnastovall Posted August 24, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just saw two very strange lenses both in LTM. Leica-Sonnar 1:1,5 f=5,8cm. Nr. 1407204. T (in red). Sonnar 1:1,5 f=6 cm. Nr. 140717 I assume these are old USSR forgeries? Was was with them a Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f/2.0 Sonnar with a Contax mount. Worth 20 dollars for a flyer or save the money for Beer?
Advertisement Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Hi johnastovall, Take a look here Leica-Sonnar 58mm?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
brianv Posted August 24, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 24, 2008 For $20, I would have grabbed them for parts. I'm not sure if Zeiss produced these, or if someone custom modified them. Good chance the optics module is real, even if the mount is custom. I've been modifying Zeiss lenses into LTM. Like a 1940 CZJ 5cm f2 'T' that came out beautifully. I suppose I better sign them so some mystery is not created if they go into circulation. At least I've been marking which Zeiss lenses have been shimmed for Nikon S-Mount, and the Nikon S2 that is modified for Zeiss lenses. Here is the pre-war 5cm F1.5 CZJ in a J-3 mount. I do not think Zeiss ever made one like this, ie pre-war that stopped down to F11. For a 5.8cm or 6cm lens, Make sure that an arch is on the RF coupling of the lens. I doubt there was enough room for the double-helical to compensate, as is found on telephoto lenses.

brianv Posted August 24, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 24, 2008 If the price is reasonable, I would get them. I'm not sure what the story is on the pre-war Zeiss lenses in LTM. Either made on special request, or optics modules adapted to custom mount. The fact that they show "F11" for a minimum stop is telling of pre-war vintage. The 49mm filter diameter means they are not forged J-3's.

berthram Posted November 27, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 27, 2008 hello, I'm so glad to see theses posts: I was trying to identify my own 5,8cm M39 sonnar since many years! If that helps, mine is: -engraved: " Sonnar 1:1,5 f=5,8cm nr.1407092. V " -It seems to be the same as "johnastovall" but the crown is black, engraved in white except for the "V" in red Serial numbers seems to be in the range of 1407... ? Must be quite rare, but for picture's quality... , very...soft! Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted November 27, 2008 Share #10 Posted November 27, 2008 Here a good advice to avoid Russian fakes How to avoid Zeiss/ Sonnar fakes Good link Philippe... expecially to remember to all that the Zeiss lenses story (including fakes, "demi-fakes", prototypes, short-lived, short production runs, "East-West" affairs...) is a much more complicated world than Leitz... probably, this is not the right place to discuss in depth issues that have, I think, their proper places in which there are the right people to give answers. Of course, I do not make this point to say that one cannot speak here of this (very interesting, btw) subject: but when I happened to make some "casual" trip in the "Zeiss historical" world, I realized that, boy, is really a complicated universe...
