jlancasterd Posted September 26, 2006 Share #23 Posted September 26, 2006 Well, I'm here, the Leica M stand is mobbed, 6 people working full time answering people's questions. Here's a few pictures, apologies if the quality is not up to M8 standrds! How much are they charging collectors for the 'Schnitt' version? - LOL! marknorton Posted September 26, 2006 Author Share #24 Posted September 26, 2006 In answer to Albert's pertinent question, grey and wet. As for the 21mm, there's not much to see outside the 24mm frame so I think the aux finder will be required. I saw the old and the new finders alongside each other and the old finder will be fine if you don't want to use frames. All in all, a good show, the M8 is great and I cannot see anyone being disappointed by it. If you've been holding off buying one to wait and see, you need to get your order in or face a long wait. Signing off from Photokina....

LUF Admin Posted September 26, 2006 Share #26 Posted September 26, 2006 Slightly off topic: 30-40 forum members will meet tomorrow at 2pm at the Leica stand! Later at 5 pm we will have dinner and lot of German beer in another place (Kolping Hotel) Kolpinghaus Messehotel - Köln - Deutz Thanks to Holger Verheyen for organisation! Findus Posted September 26, 2006 Share #27 Posted September 26, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ahh, a very clever solution to the problem of using finders and flash at the same time, Leica have built in a flash unit to the new finder haven't they - that's also why its a tad on the bulky side. Built in flash unit !!!! looks like they have a built in Microwave oven....
jlm Posted September 26, 2006 Share #28 Posted September 26, 2006 if you get the chance, ask them why they ditched the PC socket and if there is a way to disable the pre-flash for studio flash use. have fun! did anyone notice how in the first pics, the guy's thumb is hunting for the re-wind lever? marknorton Posted September 26, 2006 Author Share #31 Posted September 26, 2006 Back at base, feeling very good about the M8. Turns out the guy who was holding the silver M8 in his hands in my pictures was Otto Domes who is a Technical Development Manager at Leica and he was responsible for the M8 development. I enjoyed talking to him. He's interviewed in the latest issue of Leica News. About the only thing I'm wondering about is buying a silver camera. The camera looks absolutely great in black, but the silver finish shows handling marks (which wipe off). The R-System stand was much less busy throughout the day and when I asked about a dedicated body, the message I got back was "not anytime soon". Anyway, I've had my "15 minutes" on stage, so to others going to Photokina, I'll look forward to reading your own impressions. Had a beer on the way back with two guys from Canon who told me the Photokina budget for their stand was €15m...

Guest guy_mancuso Posted September 26, 2006 Share #33 Posted September 26, 2006 I want bigger now Albert. I even thought of selling all the DMR stuff and go MF and M8. Just hate the MF bodies. i won't buy that hassy H2. what i really want is leica to build a 645 with summilux glass and the Aptus back. Yea i know, my stomach just churned thinking about what that would cost. having a hard time resisting this M8 , sounds better and better every day. Glad Mark is there checking this out , i do trust his opinion

Guest guy_mancuso Posted September 26, 2006 Share #35 Posted September 26, 2006 Plastic , failures and just not into the Fuji glass. Although I used them with 4x5 i like the german glass better. i could go Contax but were is the support. This is for another thread , don't want to dilute Marks thread. Leaf did announce a new camera today

bradreiman Posted September 27, 2006 Share #37 Posted September 27, 2006 Mark-I have been waiting patiently since you first anounced you would attend Photokina to hear your comments. I can tell by your regular posts that you have the same hopes as I that the m8 will take the m into the digital age in the manner we all hope for. Thank you for your impressions and keep the info flowing. Its nice to hear a "real world" impression of this camera. Cheers and enjoy yourself....B
mat_mcdermott Posted September 27, 2006 Share #38 Posted September 27, 2006 Mark, thanks for the report. Two impressions: the silver M8 is really nice looking and, echoing what other people have said, the Tri-Elmar viewfinder is possibly the worst looking accessory I've ever seen. If the T-E was something I planned to buy for use on the M8 I think I would stick with the current 21,24,28 finder. By any chance did Zeiss have out the new 18/4 ZM? I couldn't tell in the photo. rohit Posted September 27, 2006 Share #39 Posted September 27, 2006 Mark, i may have missed this...but did you get any info on the lens coding impact ? Will it only benefit the JPG files or DNG files as well ? Is the sensor (RAW) data written directly into a DNG format file ? OR does it go through any "stage" (where lens code modulates it) prior to the DNG file ? OR does the lens coding modulate the electronics ie. the sensor data output itself ? thanks for sharing the experience, rohit
john_f Posted September 27, 2006 Share #40 Posted September 27, 2006 Mark, Thank you for your great first-hand reporting. Very much appreciated. I found some pics of the Leica stands on the dpreview/Photokina web site: Leica: Photokina 2006 Show Report: Digital Photography Review. Apparently, this is the biggest presence at Photokina for Leica in many years. I too would like some clarification about the 6-bit coding. What exactly does it do? Is there any in-camera image-processing being done to the M8's RAW/DNG based on the lens being used, or is there simply additional metadata about the lens being stored away for further post processing down the line ? And is the 6-bit coding used only to correct corner vignetting or is it also used to correct other aspects of lens quality, such as chromatic abberations, distortion, etc ...? I just learned that the "blue dot" is also used for the calculation of flash exposure. Does using a dedicated flash (e.g. SF24D, Metz 54) with the M8's new "M-TTL" (whatever that is) contribute anything to the calculation of the white balance (as is the case with latest Canon E-TTL II compatible cameras, lenses and flash) ? Two last small questions: - Why did Leica drop HSS (high speed synch flash introduced on the M7) with the M8? - Why did Leica not consider having dedicated buttons for ISO and WB on the camera back instead of going through menus? Thank you again for your helpful contribution ! John F.
