Guest leica_mage Posted August 8, 2008 Share #21 Posted August 8, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) You start your thread claiming you aren't 'bashing' Voigtlander...then proceed to do so. I don't quite think so. I think you may want it to be that way to suit the agenda of your post, but it isn't. One buys the Voigtlander because one can't justify spending the money for a Leica body. Indeed. One buys a Mazda, because one can't justify spending the money for a Golf. That's obvious. Indeed. I guess I just feel the original point is...pointless. When one decides to save $2500 by buying the Voigtlander one should realize it isn't going to be a Leica. Realise, and then forget. And just use the damned thing, agricultural wind-on, rifle-shot shutter, the lot. Your original post didn't seem to be comparing the cameras...you seemed to be complaining about all the shortcomings of the Voigtlander...for the price there aren't many. I don't think the post was of that nature at all. Sometimes honest threads on forums seem totally pointless. By the way, about these horrid (truly horrid, though!) Bessa things, I'll limit myself to saying that I'm too poor to invest in such cheap things. They're really horrible.

earleygallery Posted August 8, 2008 Share #22 Posted August 8, 2008 Sorry but good design doesn't necessarily cost more does it? I own some things which are truly excellent from a design point of view but cost very little. OK, rangefinder quality and auto frame selection are factors which would impact cost, but not 'balance' or feel. I used to own an M3 with Leicameter, but never got on with it. I can't explain why, it just didn't feel right. The lllf and R3 were totally different. I bought an M2 last year and wondered why I couldn't like the M3, until I picked one up at a camera fair recently, still don't like it.
bill Posted August 8, 2008 Author Share #23 Posted August 8, 2008 That was my point Bill!!You start your thread claiming you aren't 'bashing' Voigtlander...then proceed to do so. One buys the Voigtlander because one can't justify spending the money for a Leica body. That's obvious. I guess I just feel the original point is...pointless. Your original post didn't seem to be comparing the cameras...you seemed to be complaining about all the shortcomings of the Voigtlander...for the price there aren't many. *Sigh* What is it about some people that they cannot see a thread without crapping on it? Bob, Read my original post. I recently acquired a Bessa R as a "high tech" body for my LTM lenses. Much as I love my IID, not all my screwmount lenses sit comfortably on it and I thought that a more "conventional" Bessa body would make a good backup, and occasional user. It's not about the money. I'll say that again, for the hard of thinking. It's not about the money. One buys the Voigtlander because one can't justify spending the money for a Leica body. That's obvious. I guess I just feel the original point is...pointless. When one decides to save $2500 by buying the Voigtlander one should realize it isn't going to be a Leica. Show me the modern Leica body that takes LTM lenses. Show me that same Leica body that has built-in metering. I'm waiting... No? If such a thing existed I would buy it in a moment. Get it now? For your information, in addition to my Leica optics I have and use VC 15, 28, 35, 40, 50 and 75mm lenses. I have each and every one because it does something the Leica equivalent (if there is one) does not, not because of price. I have nothing against Voigtlander as a company, but the Bessa is simply not for me. It's as simple as that. I have established this through empirical means. I have shared my findings. You may disagree, but DO NOT ascribe opinions or motivations to me that I neither hold nor have stated. Thank you kindly. Regards, Bill
delander † Posted August 8, 2008 Share #24 Posted August 8, 2008 OK Bill, you say it is not the money saving aspect. Did you try it before you bought it? From what you have written here it seems that you tried an M8 and did not buy it. Jeff
earleygallery Posted August 8, 2008 Share #25 Posted August 8, 2008 Not easy to 'try before you buy' unless you know someone who will lend you said item for a weekend. Otherwise you have to buy, try and sell on e bay if it doesn't suit. A few minutes fondling in a camera shop isn't the same as real world useage. Whatever, the VC or CV (whichever is the proper way) lenses are absolutely superb, well built and a pleasure to use IMO. It was a snapshot Skopar that gave my lllf a new lease of life and led me to buy more LTM leica lenses for it. I'll say it again, Leica should offer a few M lenses in LTM mount. And how good would a repro lllf or g be?!!
bill Posted August 8, 2008 Author Share #26 Posted August 8, 2008 Fair question, Jeff. No, I didn't. I bought it secondhand via mail order from a reputable dealer for a good price. I was content to do so in the sure knowledge that I could sell it on for approximately as much as I paid for it if it didn't work out for me. If I lose any money on the deal I'll regard it as "rent". I've tried an M8 on more than one occasion, including a dealer "test drive". The M8's drawbacks, however, mean that I would honestly never want one, even if they brought out an LTM version Not sure how that's relevant to this discussion though? Pangur Ban Posted August 8, 2008 Share #29 Posted August 8, 2008 Oh, for goodness sake! The OP is comparing two cameras of a similar price, though different vintage. He happens to prefer one to the other. Others may prefer the reverse to him. Fine, I'm pleased he's come to a conclusion that works for him. He's not denigrating others choices, merely sharing the benefit of his experiences. Personally, I love my R3A as a refreshing alternative to the wonderfulness that are my Leicas. I rejoice in its lighter build, different shutter sound, look and feel. I like the way it balances inefficiently. I like imperfections in objects that have been designed with love and care. I don't value it less than my Leicas, I value it as highly but for entirely different reasons.
