stunsworth Posted August 1, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 1, 2008 Nice composition Paul. There's something very satisfying about steam engines.

chris_livsey Posted August 1, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 1, 2008 I do like the tones and the composition but, for me, you have just pulled up the shadow detail too much for comfort. I would have gone for those cars with the lovely white steering wheels for another shot - did you?
Martin T-M Posted August 1, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 1, 2008 Paul, perfectly spotted and great B&W treatment.

PaulL Posted August 2, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted August 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the comments. Chris : It was a very poor day and I made a fundemental error with the couple of shots of the cars on the roundabout, namely I didnt capture the whole roundabout and missed abit off the side. I might be able to make something of it yet. To balance the image with the large dark steam engine on the right I burnt in the left side of the frame which was very bright in comparison and did some dodging on the steam engine. The sky was masked and duplicated with multiply and adjusted to make it more overcast.
chris_livsey Posted August 2, 2008 Share #8 Posted August 2, 2008 You have more patience and skill than I. It would be interesting if you posted a small frame of the original before your work, warts and all. We can all learn, I believe, from seeing what can be done. Shame about the cars they look fantastic as a subject.

wda Posted August 5, 2008 Share #14 Posted August 5, 2008 A fascinating series in difficult lighting conditions. I wonder whether you use a grey reference in such situations? I try to, even with film, and find it helps enormously with colour correction later.
