rick_dykstra Posted June 12, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'll join the cue for an R10 when it's ready but I'm champing at the bit for something in the meantime. I'll probably get a Canon A720 IS to share with the kids but I think I'd enjoy a 'proper' camera as well. What do the Leica shooters here think of the Nikon D60 and Canon 450D, with their kit lenses? These seem like viable interim solutions for my purposes - family outings, web shots for my kids' band, kids' soccer action and group shots. Thanks. IMHO the only - but possibly decisive - advantage of the Canon is that you can get an adapter to fit Leica R lenses on it.

Rick. http://web.mac.com/theberrysband Your headline implies that you are looking for a camera to replace a R10 while waiting. Well, neither the D60 nor the D450 can replace even the DMR. We are discussing cameras that play in different leagues. If you are looking for a cheap digital SLR and want to use Leica glass, go for the Canon. The only good thing about the Canon will be that after using it for a couple months you will appreciate the R10 or whatever may come much more. The D450 is too small for regular hands, has crappy eye relief and basically everything you would expect from the Leica is missing. Kit lenses can not hold up to Leica lenses... For serious backup of an R10 you need to step in one class higher, for an alternative you need to step up one or two additional leagues.
rick_dykstra Posted June 13, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted June 13, 2008 I had a quick play with D60 and 450D yesterday afternoon. I wasn't expecting them to feel like a Leica, and they didn't. Frankly they felt like toys compared to what I'm used to and so I decided to buy a toy, at a toy like price. A little Canon A720 IS has become my first digital camera. :-) My family will have fun with this until Leica shows its cards.
tom0511 Posted June 13, 2008 Share #5 Posted June 13, 2008 why not get a used nikon d200 or a used 5d which one can get for low prices nowadays
stunsworth Posted June 13, 2008 Share #6 Posted June 13, 2008 Rick the low end Canon cameras do indeed feel flimsy - I had a plastic 300D/Rebel, so I'm aware of this <grin>. The images from that 300D however were very, very, good. So if you are only interested in the camera for a short period of time, it may be worthwhile considering something like the 450D, or Nikon equivalent. GreyCoupe Posted June 21, 2008 Share #7 Posted June 21, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) In the early rumor days of waiting for the R10, I bailed and bought a Nikon D80. Makes nice images and good primer as using film fades in my mind and habits and digital takes over. There are some nice lenses in the N group, but I am just feeding the photo jones until R10 comes. When I get really wired, I exercise the focus and diaphragms on my bushel basket full of Leica glass...
doctorlol Posted June 21, 2008 Share #8 Posted June 21, 2008 Nikon D 300 is the only 'value' choice. As to the arrival of the R10, well I've sold my R8 and lenses, and will have to pay the price when the new kit arrives, eventually. Until then the Nikon walks the walk. Iron Flatline Posted June 21, 2008 Share #9 Posted June 21, 2008 Get a low-price Canon so you can use some of the R lenses on the EOS mount. The Rebels are pretty lame though, get a used 5D.
