looks like a GREAT "all-around solution !!! - with a complaint..

2 questions:

1. Any initial reviews on this camera.. from someone who actually has used it ?

2. Whats the expected price in USD ?.

So far the negitive for me is that is a little to "Japanesse logic" to it

for example: look how many scene modes....i don't even know what "meal dishes" means. i interpert this to be a complex menu system.... this is not traditional leica

No "leica" to this camera....?

No solid quality inside & out, just simply a panasonic with a red-dot ?

i dont want this anymore. other then M8, are the rest of the new offerings just re-badged panasonics ?

I used to justify leica because i wasn't buying it for me, i was buying it for the family - something to be enjoyed now, in the next generation, and maybe even the next.

dpreview.com did a full review on the Panasonic FZ-50 which is the same camera as the V-Lux (many members here are hoping that internal software may be different but if so, it may be marginally so). Bottom line, for the most part dpbreivew loved it (feature wise) but had some noise issues with the images. They felt the processing really wiped out a lot of detail to smooth out the noise. That's not unsusual considering that Panasonic (and Leitz) opted to increase the pixels count on the same 1/1.65" chip. So even with an improved signal processor (the Venus III as it's called) at most there was no significant improvement in the image. In fact, they even questioned what difference the extra 2 million pixels made.

My take is simply doesn't matter how good all the features and ergonomics are, if the image is flawed, that's all academic. But I'd love to see if there's a second opinion.

The CLUX-1 has an almost identical set of menu options. I'm pretty O.K. with them on the CLUX as a quality pocket point and shoot but I really question them on the V-LUX. 'Looks like there may be some firmware sharing possible here. When I first saw a picture of the V-LUX I thought maybe it might have some possiblities but I'm really turned off the scene choice dial replacing a shutter speed dial so for now I'll stay with my CLUX and Digilux 2. (And a bag full of CV RF gear too.) ;-)
