Kroy Posted June 6, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 6, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all A newbie here to this interesting and informative Forum! I joined the club of Leica owners recently when I purchased a Digilux 3 which I'm in the process of setting up/customizing where possible for a weekend in the outdoors and the city. This being my first DSLR as a leisure photographer, I feel totally lost in the wide range of theoretically and practically conceivable combinations of settings to the Normal Set, Factory Set and Sets 1 to 3 respectively, likewise to Function keys 1 and 2. As of now, in 4 of 5 "customs sets", I set Func 1 to display "film mode" while Func 2 displays the range of available "custom sets". Func 2 actually makes sense to me, however, I am not so sure about Func 1 which I could set in "custom sets" as well (limited to 5 film modes though)! May I kindly ask members of this most knowledgeable forum to share tips and experiences as to assigning sensible settings to this camera with the aim to fully utilize its capabilities, also bearing in mind that I will have to learn working this gorgeous piece by doing/shooting. Your suggestions (and reasoning!) will be most appreciated. Many thanks in advance and happy shooting everyone Kroy

ASpes Posted June 6, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 6, 2008 The main idea is to set the two function button to your most used settings, so that you do not need to push too many buttons to get to them in the camera menu. So as you see this will be a fairly personal thing, In my case: * F/1 is set to "custom set", as I use it to reset the camera to my own defaults. I have only two: one is for colour and one for b&w, useful not only for jpeg work (I always have raw on). * F/2 is set to "exposure", to quickly fine tune my metering. I used to have this on the dial but I found it was too easy to bump it unwillingly.. Mind that whenever you mount a lens with no aperture ring, like Oly ones, F/1 is automatically mapped as a switch to Aperture priority, so I do not miss it too much, as I mostly use it just at the beginning of the shooting session, or when switching btw colour and b&w, something I do not do every other minute, or anyway in a hurry. Works for me of course. Btw, if you have not already, just remember to upgrade your firmware to ver. 2, lots in it. Best.
MJLogan Posted June 6, 2008 Share #3 Posted June 6, 2008 If you use JPGs rather than RAW files, I suggest that you go into the Film Mode menu and bump Sharpness up a notch and Noise Reduction down to minimum.
