Tranformed lenses

Hi:

I am seriously interested in transform my Zeiss for Contax G mount to Leica M, even rangefinder coupled. There is somebody who does such thing: Hayata, in Japan. They customize these lenses into manual focus, and, as seen by the pictures showed in their webpage, in a very fine finish. Does anybody know how to contact them?. If I get these transformations I could use an only Leica equipment, thing that I could not make if I must buy at a first time all the lens range that I need for my job.

There were some very expensive adaptors produced by Orion, I think, that offered rangefinder focussing but they're well out of production. They're pretty rare now but there is a Japanese company producing copies that appear on eBay from time to time but word on the grapevine is that they vary widely in quality so you take your chances.

I had understood that Zeiss Contax lenses couldn't be directly adapted for use on Leica M cameras because of problems with the mounting to film plane distance, which is greater on Contax cameras; but if Hayata can do it then it must be possible.

It seems that Mr Miyazaki at Hayata Camera Laboratory (website at: ƒNƒ‰ƒVƒbƒNƒJƒƒ‰ê–å‚ÌC—Eƒƒ“ƒeƒiƒ“ƒX ƒnƒ„ƒ^EƒJƒƒ‰ƒ‰ƒ{) used to do it for about $520 in 2004 but I don't know if he still offers the service. Unfortunately the website is in Japanese so I hope your translation skills are up to it!

You can contact them by email through this page: PhotoGuide Japan > DirectoryZONE - by Philbert Ono and their telephone number is Japan (03) 3841-3035.

Pete.

Thank you for the answer, but I think that there is a little confussion. The Orion adapters are only for classic Contax and Nikon Rangefinder lenses, which had the same mount. The G mount is different, and what I am looking for is a repairman who makes transformations, not adaptions.

If we can't raise the bridge, let's lower the river...

Why do you want to do this? From the sound of your original posting you want to take existing G mount lenses and have someone convert them to M mount to avoid the cost of replacing them with M-mount lenses.

From memory (I used to have a G2) the lens range is:

16mm f8

21mm f??

28mm 2.8

35mm f2.0

45mm f2.0

90mm f2.8

There was also a 35-70mm zoom.

I would seriously query the cost and hassle of conversion to what at best can only be a compromise versus selling off what you have and replacing them with new or secondhand M-mount lenses or LTM lenses with adaptors, either Leica or Voigtlander, Zeiss, Konica, Minolta, Pasoptik, Canon, Nikon etc.

Just querying the logic - it seems more than somewhat flawed to me.

Regards,

Bill

I had serious thoughts to do so some years ago (5? 7?) because the G lenses are magnificent. Their color rendition and sharpness are the equals of Leicas. But like others, i grew tired of the autofocus body, not knowing whether or not the camera focused on the right subject matter.

Once upon a time, a fellow named Reinhold Mueller in Canada performed at least one transformation. But I believe it involved cannibalizing a damaged M lens to do so. It was a nontrivial process at any rate.
