egibaud Posted May 29, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today one of my 14 Sandisk Ultra II card wont read. I plugged it into my Soyntec reader connected to an iMac 24 running OS X10.5 and the card will not read. So I plugged it back into my M8... but now the M8 says card full, and if I want to read images, it says no pictures... So I thought about formating the card in the M8 and then recover picture using a recovery software... Formating the card locks the M8. I tried another card and it is formated in about 15 seconds, this card will last for ever and I need to remove the battery to stop the operation. I plugged the card into a Windows XP computer, and it loads 4 external drives and says it found a card, but none of them can be read nor formatted. Could it be a reader problem than corrupted the card? I read a Lexar card just before and had no problem. I need to recover these unique pictures. What can I do. I emailed Sandisk but still no answer, it's Friday :-( Any idea? has anyone had similar problem and solved it using another reader? Let me explain: After inserting the reader with card into my computer I open up the Card Reader icon to find the image folder (I'm on a Mac as well). I then drag the folder onto my desktop, typically called "100Leica". Now if I have another folder on the desktop named "100Leica" (the default), I will get a warning as to wheteher I want to replace the folder on the desktop with the current (in reader). I of course say No. I then have to rename the folder while still in the reader, that days shoot for example and then I can drop it onto the desktop to copy the contents with no problem. What I have found is when I take that card and place it in camera, forgetting to format it after everything is safe and sound in two other locations (portable HD drive while in the field), I will get similar error messages, "card is full" and I can't replay the images. egibaud Posted May 30, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted May 30, 2008 I do not got that far. the computer DOES NOT SEE ANY CARD :-( I tried to format the card in the M8 but it locked up the camera and had to remove the battery to be able to switch it off and nothing was formated. I have just tried to format in a Lumix camera and it says card error check card and the camera freezes too. :-( I hope Sandisk tells me to send them the card and they can rescue something out of it. In the future, if you have a card go bad, do not try to format it until you get your lost images off it with an image rescue program. Some of the rescue programs can find the images, even if the card will not show as mounted on your computer. If the rescue program cannot access the card at all, you may have a hardware failure with the card. In other words, the card is dead. Robert Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Just create a new folder on your desktop and drag the "100Leica" into it, then rename it there and drag it onto your desktop...although I don't know why you do that, it would seem like your desktop would get cluttered in a hurry. Once again I agree with JimmyPro:eek: May I suggest you get a handy (free) program called ImageIngester - Software for professional digital photographers which helps you download your files - and rename them- in an orderly fashion. It is logical if you start renaming files on the card that you make it unusable in the camera. Or use Adobe Bridge or similar, and download to one drive for direct use and another drive for backup - automatically. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest WPalank Posted May 30, 2008 Share #10 Posted May 30, 2008 Relax guys. It's only when I'm in the field. I will take a quick look in LR but rarely do any editing. The important thing is to get it to the external hard drive will be the transfer medium to my system at home. There I have a naming system that works well for me, that's all that matters. The fact that the above happened to me once, I diagnosed the problem, then it happened on another occasion saved my butt. glenerrolrd Posted May 31, 2008 Share #11 Posted May 31, 2008 since you have other cards that work..this probably will not be it...but its worth a try. I would try another card reader. I had this problem with one of the cheap free ones that sometimes come with the card. Went to a full sized sanDisk or Lexar card reader..problem went away. It wasn t consistent across my cards.
