Seriously - do you care for vignettierung, distortion, cyan-drift, chromatic aberration, etc, really? Portait-, street-, nature- and many other kinds of pictures are much more determined by resolution and bokeh of the lenses, aren't they? To me bokeh is often eye candy by itself and I really wonder whats the secret! Posting in M8 forum cause of our bokeh penalty due to crop factor - we really need to know the tricks! (Film-M'ers: You're more than welcome to make us envious!)

 

* which bokeh do you like and for what reason?

* which lens makes for great - or not so great - bokeh?

* would you care uploading an example along with notes on lens and aperture?

* would you share your bokeh secrets and cheat sheets?

My opinion about the 50s: I prefer the Summilux (asph) to the Summicron because the Cron bokeh sometimes looks squirly to me, the Lux bokeh, even from the asph is smoother.

The Noctilux can sometimes look beautiful, and other times very distracting. I sold it anyways because I cant focus f1 reliable.

The bokeh of the Zeis 50/1.5 is kind of contrasty and alive. Sometimes this gives "energy" to the image, sometimes it can be disturbing IMO

I also have an older Elmar 50/2.8 and wouldnt rate the bokeh that great.

 

Other Leica lenses:

for my taste great bokeh:

28/2.0, 35/1.4asph, 50/1.4asph, 75/1.4, 75/2.5, 90/2.8

 

mixed-sometimes nice/sometimes distracting:

Zeiss 50/1.5, Noctilux

 

not thatgreatfor my taste:

90/4.0 macro, 50cron, older 50/2.8

50 Summilux latest pre-asph:

 

I like them both, but the 35 Cron is a bit smoother, albeit at f2 rather than f1.4. Both Tri-X, the latter pushed to ISO800. Can anyone comment on the 35mm CV 1.2 Nokton or post an example? Thinking about buying one.

I've been lurking on this forum for a few years and for some reason chose this thread to finally post something.

 

This morning I took a shot of my dog (shameless pet photo) with the 75 lux at 1.4. I love how creamy the OOF rendering is on this lens and how it makes the foreground jump out.

 

I'm sure I screwed up something during this post, but hopefully it won't keep me from posting more in the future.

Bokeh is a very difficult term to define (at last to me). I think that is something similar with the "voice" of an audio tube gear, for example. And you can like or dislike this "voice".

 

From my (little) set the lens with most reconizable "voice" is the little Elmar 35mm, that I'm using a lot these days, usually at f 6,3.

Secrets (as stated in Perspectics post)? I think that isn't any. The lens take care about this! :rolleyes: I just select the lens for the job.

This is the Noctilux of course - fully open. I find the bokeh of the Nocti more "fun" when you have some highlights in the background - but then again, this creamy look and selective focus is unique to the lens.

Hmmm, I'd forgotten about the list - it was well out of date - now revised to delete the Noctilux (and add others, naturally!)

Here is an M8 shot I posted a couple of days ago on RFF - it was quickly lauded, then viciously attacked (when word spread that it was a Canon 0.95 shot :D)! I think it may be too weird for me as well...

G'day gdi,

 

I don't think it matters what lens was used for that shot, IMHO the background detracts from the image. Background should be background, particularly if we choose to have it OOF. In this case it is intrusive and therefore not really background.

Thank you very much for your first posting in this thread and on this forum! Welcome!!! The summilux 75 is one of the most difficult to focus lenses (which I learned in this forum - I don't have one) and I like very much that you managed to have the full head of your dog in focus. Bokeh looks very smooth to me, I like it! Cheers, Claus

This is the most amazing bokeh-shot I have ever seen. Actually I saw your picture on Rangefinderforum and it was exactly the pic that triggered my interest to dig deeper in the bokeh-intrinsics. Thank you so much for posting!
