JHAG Posted May 24, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 24, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) My PowerMac PPC G5 2x2.5Ghz just died this morning. It had new components installed under Applecare last year. 3 years 1/2 old, well maintained, worked a lot but well… It seems these models had many problems with the power supply. Fortunately, I just backed up all my Lightroom catalog yesterday night. I planned to replace it with a Mac Pro next year. Instead, it will be now… Steep tag price gives me pause : what if I choose an iMac 3.6 instead ? Any insight from users here ? I mostly work with Lightroom/CS3, which was a bit slow with the PPC. cboudier Posted May 24, 2008 Share #2 Posted May 24, 2008 The "problem" with iMacs is the screen, mainly with 20" screen, less with the 24" It is difficult to have a stable, reliable contrast because it changes quicker with the screen tilt. Anyhow, I own a 20" and it doesn't bother me more than this... The number of connexion is also reduced (1x400FW, 1x800FW, 3xUSB) Otherwise, it's fast enough for photography Did you have a look at Apple's refurd store ? Price are sometimes interesting for high level Macs
JHAG Posted May 24, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted May 24, 2008 My intent was to have the 24" DVI screen of the PPC connected to the iMac, so that I could have one screen for writing, another for photoing… Regarding the connections, it's still 1 USB more than my PPC. Update Not reassuring though : Apple - Support - Discussions - iMac 24 Aluminum screen burn-in? ... Yes, I had a look to the refurb but it seems refurb machines have 25% more problems than new ones. With the Mac Pro, the card is essential. Is it sufficient to have a NVIDIA 8800 or do the ATI (three or four of them) work better (or are they mostly for video) ?
