gkr Posted May 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) After some user feedback please .......having just acquired my D Lux 3, I'm after a case for it and have seen the 2 on offer from Leica (Leather & Cordura) Is the leather rigid or soft? Does it clip to belt or only around neck? Does the leather separate completely from the camera or stay attached via strap? Is the leather case pocketable while shooting? Are there other (more practical) alternatives? many thanks gkr

streetshooter Posted May 16, 2008 Share #2 Posted May 16, 2008 I have 2 cases. The black one that comes with the extra battery....never leaves my belt... the really cool Brown one that has the strap....when I want to carry it over my shoulder. Either one works great and is not attached to the camera. I ride a Harley and the black one on my belt is great for capturing the ride.....
elgenper Posted May 16, 2008 Share #3 Posted May 16, 2008 I bought the leather case, and that´s what I use. I got a slimmer wrist strap that can be tucked into the case on top of the camera (impossible with the original strap, silly enough...). However, I saw this thread right here a few days ago: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/53468-traditional-leica-quality.html I´ve seen no signs yet of something similar happening with my own case, but I´m a bit taken aback with what I consider as plain cheating when selling a case as "genuine leather".
rob_x2004 Posted May 16, 2008 Share #4 Posted May 16, 2008 Trouser pocket. Pete payed eighty something bucks for his vinyl sensation. At mardi gras it would have been a bargain.
sebastian Posted May 17, 2008 Share #5 Posted May 17, 2008 A few more specific answers: Is the leather rigid or soft? Does it clip to belt or only around neck? It's pretty rigid. Good protection. Has a neckstrap and a belt loop. Does the leather separate completely from the camera or stay attached via strap? Separates completely. You could run the camera wrist strap through the case strap if you wanted too, but it would be pretty klunky. Is the leather case pocketable while shooting? Only if you have really big pockets. Pants, no. Jacket, yes. Are there other (more practical) alternatives? The Leica cordura case is REALLY big. I got one and sent it back. The black leather case that comes with the spare battery (check B&H and others) is not bad (and a good deal). Small, pocketable, fairly soft but some protection, slot for a spare SD card.. but no neck strap, Pocket or belt loop only. And if it matters, no "Leica" logo anywhere. Speaking shallowly, the brown leather case works very well and is, well, as cool as it gets for this (or nearly any other on the planet) digital camera. gkr Posted May 17, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted May 17, 2008 Thanks all, interesting reading ... ...... so if I generously accept a leather 'look a like' (commonly referred to as "Taiwanese Leather") then I will probably be satisfied in the short to medium term - having paid a premium A$122.00 option B is the Cordura which is bulky and therefore clumsy and option C is to find a clone case which is probably a fraction of the price and serviceable. As a cost conscious Aussie, (but not as bad as your average Pom) it seems that further research is the best option at this stage. Dave, can you please send the link for the black case you mention from B&H? many thanks to all cheers
andybarton Posted May 17, 2008 Share #7 Posted May 17, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) The leather case for the D Lux 3 is leather, not vinyl, from what I can see.
streetshooter Posted May 17, 2008 Share #8 Posted May 17, 2008 The black case with the extra battery is leather. It also has a magnetic closure that is a nice feature. I wear it on my belt and never take it off... The extra battery speaks for itself and all for $79.00 USD...a bargain shooter
mark_a_h Posted May 17, 2008 Share #9 Posted May 17, 2008 The brown leather Leica case is so beautiful, it makes me want to buy the camera.

elgenper Posted May 18, 2008 Share #11 Posted May 18, 2008 The leather case for the D Lux 3 is leather, not vinyl, from what I can see. Yes, the main case itself is indeed leather; the problem is that the belt loop is not, and that´s the most strained part of the case. Rather stupid way of saving....
