4/3rd adapter Leica-R lenses to Leica Digilux 3

Interesting to note that in the list of accessories for the Digilux 3 there is mention of a 4/3 adapter for Leica-R lenses.

If my understanding is correct the crop fact is double on the Digilux 3, so would this actually be anything of use or is it just a nice idea?

There are Leica R lens options that don't exist in the Olympus/Sigma/Panasonic/Leica 4/3rds line up.

I'm currently using a R 100mm macro on my E-330.

I've blogged about why you might want to do this.

Obviously I'm not using the Leica adapter, but other people have been making them for some time.

My OLIA uses the R to 4/3 adapter already. I plan to buy the official Leica version now too!

Colin, thanks for the link. I suppose that the 60mm M would then be a good match if you want a 120mm tele with macro capability.

LouisB,

Yes, 2x is the relevant factor (on the diagonal - you get marginally more vertical and less horizontal because of the shape).

The 60mm would probably suit the lighter 4/3rds cameras better than the 100mm just for in-the-hands-balance.

I've no experience of the 60mm, but I understand it is fine from those who have used it.

With all the excitment surrounding the M8, I started a thread that stated flatly, "Don't discount the Digilux 3 so soon..." and in it I stated that with the ability to attach R lenses to this camera you would have a formidable picture taking machine. The awesome images I've seen here have borne that out! Wow!! What images.

The thing is, however, should I look into a D3 or the Olympus E-330 (or Panasonic L1)?

I can't imagine any firmware that could improve upon what I just saw here.

@peterb:

for Digilux 3 and its Panasister, the viewfinder with its mirrors and lensmount basis comes from Oly. Probably there is a better engine inside Pana/Leica to handle sensor data.
