Some News (or Rumor) About R10

I always read the Canon using - R-Lenses with a strange sense of fascination; Why, I wonder would anyone do this? Because of the digital nature of the Canon bodies I suspect.

But it's a CANON, the biggest throwaway digital camera producer on the planet, with all it's thousand and twenty features that require you to stop shooting to use them, or at least, take your eyes away from the finder to adjust. It would appear, that there isn't much pride of ownership to put a better lens on it - it just becomes a tool - which is okay. But geese, why do the Canon user's have to keep talking about it here?

This is a LEICA site. So, in a week or so, I hope there will be an R10 so at least, for a while, we won't have to hear about 'my Canon this, or my Canon that'. DOH!!!!!!!

Cry me a river...

Edit: :)

Because Canon made a big deal about their 'leap' to 14-bit processing. Woohoo! The DMR has been making fully 16-bit files for three years now and the image quality shows.

Aside to Doug Herr - I just spent two days in Sacramento, and was surprised to find how much I liked it (I'd heard bad things from LA friends.) One thing that interested me is that while the living seems to be pretty good, the downtown is in decline -- leaving lots of potential cheap studio space. I'm surprised that I didn't see more art-related things, since cheap space in interesting areas often pull in the artists...

Didn't have my cameras with me, but there were some nice shots Sunday evening outside that Cathedral between J&K (I think) streets, as people gathered for Mass. One hour from SF, two from Reno...

I predict that Leica is going to do something weird. The weirdest thing would be if they did nothing at all, but just sat there and watched this bubble of speculation form, without trying to deflate it. If they do nothing, that *will* set these forums on fire.

Neatest thing would be if they came up with a MF body with, say, an older MF chip (like a 30mp job, for cheapness) and a DX type feature for a ~20mp crop that uses R lenses with an adapter.

That would set the martini among the pigeons.

So that's the reason why you feel DMR users would be unhappy with a 5D replacement even though no specs on that camera have been released? You don't feel that just perhaps you are jumping to a conclusion? I hope for Leica's sake that its potential market is somewhat greater than just current DMR users.

And when Leica finally comes out with AF, IS, live view, good high ISO, fast frame rates, etc., that will be a big yawn too won't it?

So tell me what the 5D replacement's image quality will be like and why it will be better than anything Leica will make.

The artists' studios are typically in the outlying areas, even more run-down than downtown.

What's really great about Sacramento is that it's two hours from everything... what really sucks about Sacramento is that it's two hours from anything :D

I don't have a clue. I simply said that with the new A900 out at $3000 and with Canon's replacement for the 5D due soon, that I feel Leica will have some challenges.

As many has pointed, the Achilles heel of Canon really is their wide angle lens ... if you're into that, you should try the A900 plus 16-35 ZA, which is 3000+1800 US, less than a 24/1.4 or 21/1.4 for a change.

Good enough is good enough to 99.99% of the photographers on earth, take a look at Mark and Ruben's thread on dpreview, there's no response. Who would give it a damn when nobody can pay the price.

Only if they try to compete for the same customers. There are many photographers who are more interested in image quality than in maximizing the number of features per dollar.

The next "5D" is slated to steal the sales of the D3/D700, real good stuff from Canon are destined to be announced at the next PMA, by that time, their new sensor fab and camera factory near Yokohama will start its production run.

Having an interest in image quality and having a camera to produce that quality are two different things. So what do you guess Leica will be coming out with that will be so great?

Assuming there is to be a Leica digital SLR, for the life or me, I can't think of anything they gain by keeping quiet about it. As I mentioned in a previous post, Sony showcased the A900 more than a year ago to try to keep Sony/Minolta users from jumping ship.

18 months to be exact.

Leica probably figured it was all too late because almost all R users have jumped ship.

How many folks were posting into these "R10" threads? You, Doug, Conrad, Andy and I, that's 5 ... adding a second hand, LCT, Steve, Rob, Jamie, that's probably all.

I'd like to see a link to the thread you are mentioning.

I think many digital cameras (and lenses) are certainly already good enough for most work. I shoot architecture and when I need higher quality, I stitch multiple images. These typically are in the 40 to 100 megapixel range. This is relatively easy to do with still objects and produces vastly higher quality and can make wider images than one can get from any single shot solution. The current 5D and Canon lenses are more than up to this.

Anything is good enough until you are aware of something better. Try a DMR.
