Just a suggestion- you can still buy (and I did so last week) new SL2s and SL2 MOTs, which have many advantages- viewfinder is FAR superior, durability (especially the MOT with it's steel gears), immediate response (unlike the R6.2), and the total lack of zinc top plates (I had to get rid of a new R4 once for this reason). You still get 1/2000 top speed, as well a fully mechanical, Letz-quality constructionwhich is more practical to maintain than an R6.2).

 

I have recently seen many of these for sale, including on eBay, where I purchased my new SL2 MOT 50 YEAR, previously owned by the designer/stylist of the M3 for Eur 1299. After having it checked, not only did it not need a CLA, but even the original batteries were fully charged and operational!

 

I have seen at least 3 other sealed SL2s in the past month, so these are not difficult to find, and will also hold their value over the longterm far more than an R6.2. Prices are also cheaper if you are lucky to find a non-50 year model.

 

Needless to say, I intend to use the camera rather than store it (it has had more than enough rest over the past 30 years)

I have seen a few of these mint SL2 MOT cameras for sale too but not recently .. there appear to have been more available than the low total production of just over 1000 might suggest ie as if there were more made? The SL2 MOT is one of my grail cameras. I have a black SL2 and a black chrome or anodised SL . Some say the SL is a better made camera ie tougher internals.

Not certain of the total production- but my one has the original Leitz sales invoice/receipt with it, dated 1978.

The collection of Rs currently is origional Leicaflex early/late models, SL2, R3MOT & R7. Interestingly of them all the SL2 gets the most use. I have briefly handled the R8/9 models and found them large, but I suppose one gets used to that. I just like the appearance of the R4 to R7 size & shape. With regard to the 3 cam lenses on the R8/9; yes, they can be used, but some of the camera's functions are un-available.

After using the R8 I have found earlier R cameras are too small! It is what you get used to. The matrix metering and ergonomics of the R8 / 9 are stunning. Though the metering in all R's is good. The R4 - R7 are the best looking SLR of any camera past or present, in my opinion.

The only limitation of not having ROM lenses is the lack of automated zoom function of a flash gun. No big deal!

Use an R8 / R9 and you may desire a DMR!
