Need some local info from you folks familiar with SoCal/LA area

My nephew wants to rent some gear (not necessarily Leica gear) to photograph the Long Beach Grand Prix next weekend and will pick up and return in the LA area (we're flying in to LAX and will have a rental car all week)

Can someone point us toward a good camera rental shop in the area?

Thanks

Allan

In LA, there is Samy's Camera and Calumet Photographic. Samy's will (and Calumet may) require a credit card security deposit equal to the value of the equipment you are renting if you are not already set up on account. Both carry a full line of Nikon and Canon digital gear. Call them or find them on-line to determine if they have in stock what you want, and to reserve it, and also to learn more about their deposit requirements. They also may ask you to provide loss insurance.

If you are credentialled to shoot the GP, there is a great press room in the convention center with plenty of power to run your computers to download your images. It is attended so you can leave your gear there during sessions while you are out shooting. They provide journalist lunches Saturday and Sunday. There are a very limited number of lockers available as well - bring your own lock - to stow your equipment while you work or eat. But don't trust them overnight.

Weather forecast is great.

Thanks Eric

Thanks Randy

I will pass the info along to Andy

I am really, really looking forward to this race: the "Monaco of America" as I've always seen it on TV

Hope to catch you both there if you are attending or working the race

Thanks

It should be a very interesting race. Champ car is dead and now merged with IRL.....but this is sort of the last Champ car race. I believe Paul Tracy is running and Jimmy Vasser and other legendary drivers. Should be a lot of fun although it is not part of a series.

I wonder what the future of Long Beach will be???

It will be continued

If my memory is correct they're either working on or already have an agreement for the future

It is in everyone's best interest that IndyCar keep one of the greatest venues in the world--like I said, an "American Monaco"

The race should be very, very good; and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Jimmy win it

Although I follow (and have followed) IndyCar for awhile, there's no denying the DP01 is a fantastically beautiful car--far, far prettier than the Dallara--and the cars actually sound like race cars!!!

I'm thoroughly looking forward to it--can't wait!

Thanks

Allan

Two weeks ago - or thereabouts, the City of Long Beach renewed its contract with the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach for another ten years - through 2017. I've shot for them for many of the years the race has run and my marching orders this year are to provide them lots of overall views from high venues showing the circuit and city, and lots of medium and close shots showing happy crowds and happy faces. We're not to concentrate on the Champ Cars. The reunification of open wheel racing in North America, in my opinion, can only be good for fans, sponsors, venues, and TV, print, and electronic coverage.

It always is an enjoyable weekend. Put your cameras down and enjoy the Toyota Celebrity Race (a.k.a. Demolition Derby) midday Saturday. It's almost always great value for money. Have a good time and bring sunblock.

The Celeb Race should be good fun

Agreed about the happy faces

Ron McQueeney at the Speedway has told me over and over when someone applies to a job he always looks for people shots first--he has plenty of shots of cars, which always get replaced with different-looking ones

;)

Will do on the sunblock!

Thanks

Allan
