Leica M 75mm Summicron ASPH APO - eBay (item 160225923220 end time Apr-09-08 16:49:47 PDT)

With a 7 year history being on e-bay and only 4 transactions, I think it's just a naive seller. I would think a fraudulent listing would put a *little* more effort into making it seem more real. However, I will not be bidding on this. I think it's foolish for anyone trying to sell a Leica lens to not give a LOT of details about the lens.

If you are interested start sending him questions..ask for pictures etc. I did this once and found the seller to be a small studio and I was able to get the phone number and address. talked to the individual . Got a great deal because no one trusted his low volume .

Ditto, ended up with beautiful Noctilux for $1,600 that way. Get in touch, ask some questions, be involved. Bargains don't usually "just happen"... you have to do some work. Ask for pics, maybe even the serial number, get a read on the seller. Don't just be a consumer.

Public outing of ebay auctions became rather popular in recent weeks. Not every inexpensive offer is a fake. Ask the seller if he is real or use common sense.

If the auction is for real, your deal just went out the window because the people reading this thread may be interested in bidding.

I have seen that a number of times. I see a good deal, bid on it then somebody mentions it here and the item bids above retail. BTW, I haven't looked at or bid on this particular item.

Ditto on the 'use common sense' advice. I've also purchased items from legitimate sellers with zero feedback - I got a bargain on a Kodak digital back a couple of years ago from a pro photographer with no feedback and a new account. Due diligence by both of us, speaking in person on the phone and exchanging details to confirm IDs resulted in mutual trust and a great deal. You just need to apply the same caution to eBay as you would any other large personal transaction.

If your gut feel says 'walk away' then listen to it ...

I will ask for the lens (especially the rare and expensiv ones) to be taken with the date on the newspaper. It rules out the use of fake pictures, like a "proof of life" of the asset.:p
