gravastar Posted April 2, 2008 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've just been informed by a reliable source that Leica are increasing many prices in the UK from 1 April. Most lenses seem to be in the 9% to 12% range but there are some items like camera bags that are 38%. Summarit prices are unchanged. It would appear that Leica will honour the old prices for orders from dealers up to 1 May so if there's anything you were considering, purchase now and support you favourite dealer. Bob. marknorton Posted April 2, 2008 Share #2 Posted April 2, 2008 Presumably linked to the fall in the pound against the euro...
Arif Posted April 2, 2008 Share #3 Posted April 2, 2008 Just had a similar increase in Japan. Not all items but many of the lenses not raised earlier. Summarits were not impacted. Arif
andybarton Posted April 2, 2008 Share #4 Posted April 2, 2008 While in a London dealer this afternoon, he showed me today's official price list. IIRC, as an example, a 21 f2.8 goes from around £1,800 to £2,400 That's quite a hike... Blamed on the Euro/Sterling exchange rate and "material prices" apparently. No hike on bodies, from what I could see,

gravastar Posted April 2, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted April 2, 2008 It certainly makes C/V (or Zeiss) lenses look even more attractive... This is sad. Leica is slowly pricing it's self out of the game. I understand that Leica will accept orders from dealers at the old prices until 1 May, so if there is a lens you were thinking of purchasing support your friendly dealer and order now at the old price. nomad Posted April 3, 2008 Share #7 Posted April 3, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm basically out of the game - kids in Uni etc. I can't keep up or justify the prices anymore. regards, David
michaelc Posted April 5, 2008 Share #8 Posted April 5, 2008 R G Lewis are still selling at pre-increase prices, while stocks last. See their website.
ptruman Posted April 5, 2008 Share #9 Posted April 5, 2008 Glad I bought my gear when I did. I've never been convinced of the value for money for Leica, but at least it suggests that the second hand value of my kit should hold up if I ever come to sell it. Can't see how price increases of that magnitude will help boost the market though when the trend with almost any other manufacturer is down (at least in real terms). Nice zip though...
delander † Posted April 5, 2008 Share #11 Posted April 5, 2008 I dont see many threads here nowadays about the Summarits, perhaps they have not been selling well and Leica are trying to encourage sales by increasing the price differential. Trouble is that Leica customers try to buy either the best Leica lenses or if strapped for cash buy CV or Zeiss. The Summarits fall in no-mans-land. andybarton Posted April 5, 2008 Share #12 Posted April 5, 2008 I could have bought a Summarit this week, but bought something else instead.
bill Posted April 5, 2008 Share #13 Posted April 5, 2008 I could have bought a Summarit this week, but bought something else instead. Rutland..? Regards, Bill
earleygallery Posted April 5, 2008 Share #14 Posted April 5, 2008 You'd get quite a few pints of Rutland for the price of a Summarit!!
mym6is12 Posted April 6, 2008 Share #15 Posted April 6, 2008 If Leica want's to kill sales of the M8 and lenses, then price rises are a sure way to do that. There is a glut of s/h and ex-demo lenses at the moment - just look here: If Leica would allow lens coding from a M8 menu, then I would be a much more likely to buy one rather than wait for a M9. Lens coding is just too expensive and restricted by patent to Leica's own lenses. The Summarit's are not the answer, when there are so many older Leica, Zeiss and Voitglander lenses out there. delander † Posted April 7, 2008 Share #16 Posted April 7, 2008 Although I have not had Leica M cameras before the M8 from what others say it seems that there have been substantial lens price hikes since the M8. Perhaps it is simply that Leica are milking it now. Jeff
