Rob, I totally disagree! I wasted a trip to go to that shop on the basis of what they had claimed TO HAVE IN STOCK. This is a s/h dealer by the way.

Also as others who have bought by mail have found, it takes a long time to get what you have bought (as he's probably off looking for it) and then the condition is pot luck, not as described.

His adverts promise things such as mint/boxed or 'unused' items that simply don't seem to exist.

Rob, sorry, I did do my homework. He advertises many many items, not like its just one lens to enquire about. Some items in the ad state 'many examples in stock' rather than pricing a particular item. I also phoned first and he was just as vague and told me to call in.

If you want to stick up for them, try doing business with them first!!

Im not defending him. What is so hard about phoning someone and asking point blank if they have something specific in stock. Why wander half way across town on the lure of low prices and some vague speculation that maybe something you might like is sitting on the shelves.

This is getting a bit silly Rob. I did call, told them what I was looking for, they said they too many lenses to offer over the phone (I wasn't after a specific lens i.e. a silver mk1V summicron, just a 35mm M or screw fit lens and wanted to see what the options were) and I'd best come into the shop which I did.

When I went to the shop the guy wouldn't get off his arse to bother serving me, and when I asked to see one of the lenses he said I'd see it when I bought it. So I left.

End of, thanks.

.....If he advertises in AP, an email to Damien D could be useful too.

Andy, I suspect that Damien's hands are tied by his commercial department who wish to preserve advertizing revenues. I am sure he must be aware of the long catalogue of disgruntled customers with a certain London trader.

Some time ago, while attending a meeting of the Leica Fellowship, I heard a discouraging discussion of one member's miserable and costly experiences, based on wrongful description of expensive professional equipment. Others voiced their concerns to an extent that I was put off dealing in that quarter. This cautionary warning and similar threads on this forum merely reinforced my decision.

I've known this guy and his shops for many, many years, even back when it was in Prince of Wales Road [ also Camden] and my advice is - don't bother - he buys in a lot of pro gear that has been somewhat looked after cosmetically, but which has been used to near death.

In my opinion he should rename it Nicholas & Son or go the whole hog and call it Steptoe & Son as [ in my opinion again ] it's really just a junk shop - more or less the same as a car breakers.

Out of 10 I'd give him :

0 for service and customer care

0 for stock condition

10 just for the experience

The only redeeming factor about it is that it makes Classic Camera look sort of reasonable.

Regards

Bruno
