telyt Posted September 9, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) That's Jays in the mountains for most of us. I visited the mountains SW of Reno Nevada last weekend where cones of the Sugar Pine trees were opening and dropping seeds. Several species take advantage of the pine nuts; Pinyon Jays (no photos) hover by the cones and, looking into the opening cones, pick out the exposed pine nuts. Clark's Nutcrackers perch on the cones and hammer them apart, woodpecker-style. Steller's Jays have neither the hovering skills of the Pinyon Jays nor the powerful bills of the Clark's Nutcracker; their technique is to perch below the cone and (I presume) look for seeds in the cone; targeting the seed, they fly up and smash into the cone to dislodge the seed. Technical stuff: R8/DMR, 560mm f/6.8+1.4x APO-Extender-R, shoulder stock & monopod, ISO 400.

leicamann Posted September 9, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 9, 2006 Ditto, Doug I think you've just outdone yourself on these. As far as "wildlife action" shots you've taken..this one ranks as the best. Thanks for sharing Regards, Leicamann:)
telyt Posted September 9, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted September 9, 2006 Thanks John and Al... I wish I'd gotten some Pinyon Jay photos as well. The flock of PIJA were just finishing their breakfast as I arrived.

stuny Posted September 10, 2006 Share #6 Posted September 10, 2006 Doug - I really miss not seeing your work more often. Of course I like all three, but the drama of #3 is wonderful.
