tashley Posted March 11, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 11, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Pursuant to another thread about needing to move away from exclusively using an M8 but wanting to keep to Leica glass where possible, I've been looking at the possibilities suggested there by others of using R glass on Canon EOS bodies. It is my understanding that there are a number of different adaptors available. Some are more expensive and better quality, some have a chip on that allows focus confirmation. Can anyone suggest one that has the chip and is also very high quality? I also need to know whether the focus confirmation feature only occurs with R lenses that have the ROM contacts? I've been offered two 35 R crons, one with ROM and one without, at wildly different prices, so would love to know where the economies might lie! Thanks in advance for any knowledge you may have! Advertisement Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Hi tashley, Take a look here R lenses for EOS. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sdai Posted March 11, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 11, 2008 I've never tried any non-ROM 35 cron, the going price for a ROM 35 cron in EX+ or Mint - condition should be between 700, 800 US dollars. ROM contacts are useless in this case, there're two guys on Ebay offering good focus confirmation adapters, one is ericcc1006 and the other is happypagehk. Wait a couple more months, R lenses price will drop even further ... when more people know the system is dead.

sdai Posted March 11, 2008 Share #4 Posted March 11, 2008 Thanks, but I'm still not clear: if the R lens has no ROM contacts, then what is the chipped, focus-confirming adaptor talking to? They'll glue a tiny piece of printed circuit board with some metal contacts on the adapter to "emulate" a EOS lens so the EOS camera can be tricked and enable focus confirmation for you. tashley Posted March 11, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted March 11, 2008 thank you! so that will work on a non ROM lens then, thereby saving some cash! Pity there's no similar trick on the d3 with zeiss or cv glass.

Why should R lenses be any different?
sdai Posted March 11, 2008 Share #8 Posted March 11, 2008 Contax Zeiss lens prices are stable or offscale high. Why should R lenses be any different? Which Contax lens price could stay high? except the 21 Distagon, 35 Shift and 135/2.0. And those are the MM types because they can be adapted to Canon, and most others which can be adapted are found to be hard sales now. Nobody wants the AF Contaxs. That's because the AF Contax (N System) lenses were only out for about a year before Contax was killed. You didn't answer the question. Why should the R system lenses be any different from Contax? sdai Posted March 11, 2008 Share #10 Posted March 11, 2008 You didn't answer the question. Why should the R system lenses be any different from Contax? Well, if you are saying Leica lenses shouldn't be different Contax lenses, then you can expect to pick up some of them for 300, 400 dollars. Good thing is, they are REAL Leica lenses ... not crappy Panasonic wannabes.

Good thing is, they are REAL Leica lenses ... not crappy Panasonic wannabes. Besides the durability factor, I suspect that the PanaLeica designs are just as good (if not better) than the older stuff. I mean, COME ON! If you were trying to get a prime Contax or Leica lens, all well and good, but do you REALLY want to go back to those old style zoom lenses? Yuck. They were a bear to focus and zoom. Now you can AF and only need to worry about composition.
sdai Posted March 11, 2008 Share #12 Posted March 11, 2008 but do you REALLY want to go back to those old style zoom lenses? You need a refresh of your knowledge base in this area ... the zoom style in every last generation Leica and Contax lenses are as new as any Japanese lenses. They've made some push pull style zoomers but those are much older models.

FastFashnReloaded Posted March 11, 2008 Share #15 Posted March 11, 2008 Man, then you shouldn't bother with this thread, and this forum at all ... I'm into Leica for the Digilux Oly/Pana/Leica SLRs, point and shoot PanaLeicas and M series. The R series (excepting the 6.2) never really interested me. If Leica comes out with a Minilux D I could be interested in that as well. Don't tell me what I should bother with. As the Gunslinger says, "The world has moved on." I'm happy Leica is trying new things too.

Panasonic paid Leica some money to use their trademark, and Leica has discontinued the Digilux 3 ... There's NO 4/3 camera in Leica's catalogue now, there's NO 4/3 lens in Leica catalogue EVER! stunsworth Posted March 11, 2008 Share #18 Posted March 11, 2008 Tim to use the focus confirmation adapters you will need the Rom contacts on the lenses to read it No you won't. What you will need is an adaptor with a small chip attached to it. That chip connects to the contacts on the R body. There is no direct electrical connection between the R lenses and the EOS body. sdai Posted March 11, 2008 Share #19 Posted March 11, 2008 Tim to use the focus confirmation adapters you will need the Rom contacts on the lenses to read it No, Guy, that's not correct, the ROM contacts can't talk to the EOS camera, just count the number of contacts on the Leica lens, 9, right? How many pins are there in the EOS mount? And if you hold the lens up to the mount, the contacts' position don't match the pins' position.
