Digilux 2 Upgrade Programme

With all the talk about M8 upgrade programmes, I couldn't resist thinking about our much loved Digilux 2 ....

Firstly wouldn't it be great if Leica offered upgrades on this camera form factor - eg new hi-resolution sensor, circuitry upgrade, etc

The body and already excellent lens would no doubt be able to cope with new circuits and sensor if they were retro fitted and people could retain their beloved cameras, whilst Leica would in effect have a new line without re-tooling costs

So what would you specify, if a D2 upgrade became possible ?

Stuff the FF - totally impractical in that camera - leave that to the M9.

Essentials:

1) Keep that lens!!

2) Faster, larger buffer

3) 7.5Mp - 10Mp (no more) sensor with much better noise performance to give us good 800 ISO. I'm not wedded to any particular sensor type as long as it works!

4) Improved brightness in the EVF

5) Better firmware all round giving more steps in noise, saturation and contrast control, adding sharpness. It should not be impossible to adapt the Function button to allow selection of a couple of preset setups.

6) Quicker AF would be nice

I would go for it like a shot and I suspect many more would as well!

If Leica don't go for something like it - they really are missing out!

Hi, sorry to say, it will never happen as D2 is in fact bulk made at Pana.

You are, unfortunately, most probably right, but, hey, don't stirr up the bitterness in our cups... :(

There is not even a clear indication for a sensor update of the M series and the first thing you are asking for is a new sensor in a camera that was built around the existing sensor. Get serious.

Hey, I want to add, I still treasure my D2 a lot even after getting my M8.

I take it for a sensor change, turnwheel change, ...

It would for sure be lovely if Leitz-Pana do offer to upgrade

though I just wonder the economic margin for them =)

Whilst originally perhaps being only partly serious, it would be a very practical and maybe even a 'quick win' for Leica - after all the cameras are already there and the enthusiasm of the market already exists - all it would take is to bring the cameras in for retro fitting of components - I'm not sure you even need Panasonic for that....

Why? It costs nothing to dream.

RAW buffer and perhaps a bit more weight to the camera, please. Oh, and notches on the zoom ring at the standard prime lens lengths so that it's easy for me to set a specific length -- say 28 or 50 -- without having to tape the ring so it wouldn't move.

Other than that, my Digilux 2 is almost perfect in terms of quality and ergonomics. It would be hard to improve on it without compromising something else.

There will be an upgrade program for the Digilux-2. It will be quicker and cheaper than the one for the M8. To upgrade the Digilux-2 will involve 3 steps, both of which can be done at a local Leica dealer without sending your camera away. Step 1: Bring your Digilux-2 to your local Leica dealer. Step 2: Purchase a Digilux-3. Step 3: Place your Digilux-2 in the dumpster behind the store. Note: This upgrade program will be available forever, or until Panasonic stops making Leica's, whichever comes first.

Ugh! Why on earth should I want to swap a small silent convenient camera that produces a very high IQ for a large heavy dslr (with admittedly good IQ)?

I have both the D2 and an L1. I was offered the usual "give us your D2 and buy a D3 offer" which I naturally turned down, and now that the D2 has returned from Solms the L1 is languishing somewhat unused.

I dont get it. everybody wants to upgrade the digilux 2.

What is leica is waiting for. I mean they should know by now the camera is a classic and as much as i like the Digilux 3/l1 the digilux 2 is better in many aspects and has many fans all over world.

They should make it again with today standars (better buffer more pixels, etc.) the upgrade seems to me to complicated

How about some upgrades for Commodore computers, while we're "dreaming"....Or maybe we can convert all those 8-track players to handle MP3 files?

I'm not sure 2/3rds sensors even exist anymore - except maybe in broadcast camcorders?

Sony 828 - gone, Olympus 8080 - gone, Minolta A2 - gone, Canon Pro1 - gone, Nikon whatever-it-was - gone.
