biglouis Posted June 28, 2008 Share #324 Posted June 28, 2008 I don't think I ever mentioned that after much back and forth, Steve and I did receive an 'adequate' apology from the ODA following our complaint about being stopped outside the site in Hackney. To be fair to the ODA, how many people who have been harassed by the authorities, or people who think they have authority, have received the attention that Steve and I received? I had two separate lengthy phone calls with senior members of the ODA and 3 letters. I was also offered a face-to-face meeting and the chance to photograph on the ODA site as a form of compensation (which I turned down as I did not want to compromise the integrity of asking for an apology). Anyhoo, case closed but I suppose the lesson is, if you are treated badly, do not let it go by. Only by making a fuss (and I guess involving the press) can we ensure that this issue is eventually resolved and we can continue to work as amateur photographers without harassment. LouisB PS Steve sent me a very interesting link about the effect of the Olympics on Hackney and the surrounding area...... well worth a read.
stunsworth Posted June 28, 2008 Share #325 Posted June 28, 2008 In which case you need to buy this DVD... Amazon.co.uk: Bob Dylan - The Other Side Of The Mirror - Live At The Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965 [2007]: Murray Lerner: DVD Fascinating to watch him develop over a few years at Newport. Personally I'd go for the big three any time - Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde, though as I say if I could only have one album it would be Blood On The Tracks. I bought it when it first came out in 1975 and have been mesmerised by it ever since.
delander † Posted June 28, 2008 Share #326 Posted June 28, 2008 BBC radio 4 at 10.30 this morning: 'Lenny Henry questions the iconic status of people or things held dear by many. Poet Laureate Andrew Motion has described Dylan as the greatest living artist in any medium, a claim which Lenny subjects to much ridicule. Can he be convinced otherwise? Contributors include Kris Kristofferson, Jools Holland, Bryan Ferry, Al Kooper and Andrew Motion.' Personally I agree that his first 4 albums were the best, and the greatest was The Freewheelin Bob Dylan, bought it as a student at university in 1964. There have however been so many wonderful songs on his other albums. I also prefer his rendition of his songs Jeff

farnz Posted June 28, 2008 Share #329 Posted June 28, 2008 An interesting concept but I can't see that it would be very successful because the flash on the 'victim's' camera has to fire before the sensor on the Fulgurator will sense anything and the delay between the sensor and the Fulgurator's flash firing will probably be long enough for the victim's shutter to have closed (unless its on slow shutter synch). And even then, the Fulgerator needs to be pointing at the victim camera's target for the grafitti to register in the victim's picture so there is double the delay as the flash bounces off the target before hitting the Fulgurator's sensor. It's also dubious whether the residual flash power from the vitim's (P&S?) camera hitting the Fulgurator's sensor after rebounding from the target would be enough to trigger the sensor. I think Julius von Bismarck should test his camera at JFK Airport. Thanks for posting this, Im. Pete.

Steve I must get that to compliment my copy of the Scorcese biography (which must have included some of this footage). Now I come to think of it, Bringing It All Back Home has to be my favourite Dylan album. From the opening track onwards it is one outstanding song after another. It is my theory that the rock boom of the md-60s really started with and was inspired by this album and from it came many fine US and UK rock groups. But there again, what do I know? giordano Posted June 28, 2008 Share #331 Posted June 28, 2008 An interesting concept but I can't see that it would be very successful because the flash on the 'victim's' camera has to fire before the sensor on the Fulgurator will sense anything and the delay between the sensor and the Fulgurator's flash firing will probably be long enough for the victim's shutter to have closed (unless its on slow shutter synch). Presumably the "camera" part of the Fulgurator has its shutter and mirror removed or locked on T or B, so this delay will be no more problematic than with optical remote flash triggers generally: i.e. no problem at ordinary sync speeds (which will be the case when the light is dim enough for the victims' autoflash to fire). And even then, the Fulgerator needs to be pointing at the victim camera's target for the grafitti to register in the victim's picture so there is double the delay as the flash bounces off the target before hitting the Fulgurator's sensor. Ditto; in any case this delay is the time it takes light to travel a few metres: i.e. nanoseconds. It's also dubious whether the residual flash power from the vitim's (P&S?) camera hitting the Fulgurator's sensor after rebounding from the target would be enough to trigger the sensor. An ordinary cheap optical trigger wouldn't be sensitive enough, but he's clearly got something with a more sophisticated light-gathering system and maybe some active circuitry instead of the usual transformer. Wouldn't you think that bystanders would notice the Fulgurator's flashes?
jrc Posted June 28, 2008 Share #332 Posted June 28, 2008 Wouldn't you think that bystanders would notice the Fulgurator's flashes? Not necessarily -- a high-speed flash is more of a "wink" that a blast, and if you're doing it somewhere with a lot of cameras around, a quick flash wouldn't be much noticed --especially as it is simultaneous with the shooter's flash. As for delay, this is just like a slave flash, triggered by the original shooter. JC

farnz Posted June 29, 2008 Share #337 Posted June 29, 2008 Don't you think it's run it's length - 334 messages or so? No I don't Steve. It's useful to keep up with what's happening in the paranoid society in which we live. Keeps all the relevant info in one place. I agree with both viewpoints ... and therein lies the conundrum for this particular thread: it's so long now that newcomers are unlikely to read it so generally the same faces are following it and contributing which means little new blood and the thread gradually losing steam it contains a large amount of excellent information that will be useful for current and future reference that should be preserved and readily available to the wider audience certain members (Im! ) are running mischievous interference, which pulls it gently away from its core theme, which is wayward intervention by misinformed or over-zealous 'authorities' that disrupts lawful photography So, the question is: is there a more convenient or more appropriate (better?) place to retain the important contributions such as: Bill's excellent pull-out on Photographers' Rights various members personal experiences and what eventuated progress on Austin Mitchell's Early Day Motion the excellent work by members such as Brian and James in raising various official bodies' awareness to the issues and encouraging them to acknowlege the issues and act on them. My first thaought was that the Leica Wiki might be the place but on reflection it's not the right place because these are wider issues that affect more than only Leica users. So perhaps a cut-down version of the thread as a sticky with a reference back to this thread and let the thread take its course? Or we could do nothing and watch the thread perhaps stagnate and die a natural death with the worthwhile content lost. What do you think should be done? Pete. DTD Posted June 29, 2008 Share #338 Posted June 29, 2008 I think the thread's too long for new comers. Meantime RedEye (the North West photographers network) are giving over their next free Manchester public meeting to cctv/surveillance and harassment of photographers. It's on 9 July from 6:30pm at MDDA 117-119 Portland St, M1 6ED I'll be showing my current series about cctv, John Perivolaris will be talking about surveillance and Christian Payne will talk about live streaming of photography and video. I'll also post this elsewhere on the forum. More info at: Event Details
