adan Posted September 13, 2006 Share #302 Posted September 13, 2006 Two new observations: The 28 f/2.8 ASPH takes 39mm filters.....something even film users will enjoy. A view I saw of the top plate with power on shows the silver circle DOES contain both a number for remaining shots and a battery pictogram....(Guy!?) Guest guy_mancuso Posted September 13, 2006 Share #306 Posted September 13, 2006 This is really starting to shape up nicely. i still have the 64 thousand dollar question and that is to get EV do i hit the half shutter and turn the dial or the set and turn the dial. Some one said there still maybe a surprise and i have a feeling there is also, the only thing i can think of is maybe a electronic frame lens selector. Okay that is out in left field but hey why not

ho_co Posted September 13, 2006 Share #308 Posted September 13, 2006 That is a good observation and I also hope that they have improved the eye piece. Did you notice in the menu, it says DNG down the list except for DNR-jpg fine? A tyo:eek: Bob Bob-- I had missed that. Perhaps it's not an error; that may be the setting for Digital Noise Reduction when you're using the high ISO speeds? --HC

Nice try, Guy, but I don't think so. We'd have heard about that one by now. The camera really does look good, though. So we've got two questions: One, the ISO/EV/WB settings; and two, the funny-looking window on the front ("blue dot"). Maybe the truth is that that window is actually an antenna for satellite radio, and the large cavity behind the door on the left side is a storage space for ear-buds. --HC

gabek Posted September 13, 2006 Share #313 Posted September 13, 2006 With the dozen or so pictures now making the rounds, there are views of every facet of the M8 except the bottom. Is the tripod socket mounted in the center? Does anyone know? Any guesses based on location of memory card and battery bays? The tripod mounting location will not be the determining factor in whether or not I buy an M8!! Gabe

john_f Posted September 13, 2006 Share #315 Posted September 13, 2006 Gabe, Yes, I too would recomend reading the entire thread. But to give you a quick answer, the tripod screw thread is now centered. Translation: Regarding colour spaces, in addition to the traditional sRBG and Adobe RGB color, you will be able to use a new color space: "RBG cei", which apparently offers an even larger space (than the first two). We are also told that the RAW files are coded in 16-bit per (RGB) color, as opposed to the usual 12-bits (e.g. Nik.. D2X, EOS 1Ds II, etc....) Interesting development all of this. But I don't think Leica Camera must be thrilled with these leaks. What was the French distributor for Leica thinking when they allowed photographers at the Perpignan Photo Festival (VISA) to take pictures of the M8 - even filming the M8 in action!! The real action right now is not taking place in the blogs, it's in the boardrooms of Leica.
gabek Posted September 13, 2006 Share #316 Posted September 13, 2006 Gabe, Yes, I too would recomend reading the entire thread. John and Pascal - Point taken and I will do so forthwith. Thanks for the additional information. As to the "French leak," I think it was inevitable, given human nature and the fact that only one person can keep a secret. It is possible, but unlikely, that the person monitoring the handling of the cameras was out of the room at the time. Behind closed doors, as sweet as the atmosphere of public anticipation could be for Leica, they may have decided it was time to make a disclosure, but not officially. The only thing they Leica loses is the opportunity to write the press release that introduces the M8. Gabe

TimF Posted September 14, 2006 Share #319 Posted September 14, 2006 iso 160-2500. What a curious starting point. Any reason why that you know of?
Guest guy_mancuso Posted September 14, 2006 Share #320 Posted September 14, 2006 It is interesting they start at 160 . Well i heard the noise was good at the higher ISO and maybe they figured this is the low light camera that everyone wanted. if it performs well at 160 than I guess it may not matter and with a 1/8000 shutter on board.
