dennersten Posted February 20, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 20, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am thinking about treating myself with a repainted M2 for my upcoming birthday. I have heard about Shintaro. His reputation is that he is good but incredible slow (right??). Does he have any competitors? Can you recommend anybody else? peter_n Posted February 20, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 20, 2008 I believe CRR in Luton, England are very good - I've read high praise for their work on this and other forums. Check them out: CRR, Luton, England
bill Posted February 20, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 20, 2008 I believe CRR in Luton, England are very good - I've read high praise for their work on this and other forums. Check them out: CRR, Luton, England I have used CRR for a CLA, though not (yet) for a repaint. Service is quick and courteous. The end result was exceptional. ronryser Posted February 25, 2008 Share #7 Posted February 25, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm getting an M3 outfit from ebay. The camera has the name of a previous owner on it. It appears to be in fine condition (the finish and vulcanite) aside from that. Would it make sense to get that repainted or is it going to be more money than that's worth? I know that's a fairly subjective question, but I'd appreciate the opinions. FWIW, this is my first post on the film side. I have a couple of digitals (a Digilux 2 and a compact Nikon) and am a complete amateur. I've been watching M3's on ebay for a while and when I saw the M3 outfit on ebay which included 3 Leica lenses, decided to go for it. I haven't shot film since I was a kid and then again for a while in my 20's and then didn't own a camera for some time. I plan to look around this side of the forum for a while for other tips/sugestions and get into photography a little more deeply as a hobby. Cheers, Ron
bill Posted February 25, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 25, 2008 Ron, welcome back from the dark side You will find yourself calmer from the smell of emulsion You will find yourself irresistible to women You will find yourself taking better photos ...well, maybe...! You pose an interesting question. I'd go about it this way: 1. Get the body CLA'd. You haven't said where you live, but there are good people in Europe and, I understand, in the US. 2. Get the lenses CLA'd, if they need it. A wash and brush up to remove accumulated haze works wonders. 3. THEN consider a repaint. CRR do beautiful work. ErikFive Posted February 25, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 25, 2008 I will have a painted M3 on its way soon hopefully. All engravings are gone except M3 and serial and it will be Matte black.
stunsworth Posted February 25, 2008 Share #10 Posted February 25, 2008 Håkan, I'd avoid Shintaro unless you can get a very firm estimate from him. There have been a few people here and elsewhere who have sent cameras and never received them back. I've seen cameras that he's done, and they are truly superb, but under the circumstances I'd personally be very careful before sending anything to him. See this thread from last year... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/23458-requiem-m3.html I don't know if Jaap ever received the M3. Guest suilvenman Posted February 25, 2008 Share #12 Posted February 25, 2008 Like Bill, I have had CLA (and repair) work only done by CRR Luton but I take any and every opportunity to sing the praises of Peter Grisaffi and his outstanding work. Cheers, Ken.

stunsworth Posted February 25, 2008 Share #15 Posted February 25, 2008 Indeed it is. It seems he forgot he had it, and the intervention of Tom Abrahamsson jogged his memory. Glad you got it back Jaap, but it wouldn't encourage me to send him anything. Does anyone know how much CRR charge for painting a camera? I have an M3 that's been sat on a shelf for a while and I think it would look rather nice in black.

meatboy Posted February 26, 2008 Share #17 Posted February 26, 2008 If buying a rough M series to be repainted what should we look out for regarding condition? Obviously dents are bad but if there are nicks in the chrome does the chrome get removed providing a smooth surface for the repaint? How much of a beater should you go for to get a good result on a repaint ? Tim
rob_x2004 Posted February 26, 2008 Share #18 Posted February 26, 2008 I would be more worried about the internals. The shutter cloths, delaminating rangefinder patches, springs and bits and pieces. There are a hundred ways you can beat out or pull out or fill out a ding or a scratch. What dramas can you get yourself into on the inside of an old Leica? Anyone got a list of "to ask abouts" before buying an old M2/3?

Canfred Posted February 26, 2008 Share #20 Posted February 26, 2008 We have a chap here in Australia Frank Morand of Forster N.S.W. He is a specialist still using the original black baking it at 300 C for two hours and filling the lettering with the old genuine white lead method. Any dents are filled with metal if nessesary once finished it will look like the real Leica it should. The cost I do not know but he did work on my M3 , no paint he just replaced the chrome on the base PERFECT. If you like his number send me a note , the gentlemen does not use computers but this does not affect his workmanship. Manfred
