Black rhino at Zuka game reserve South Africa.Probably the most aggressive, ill-tempered and therefore most dangerous large mammal to encounter on foot. I am totally fascinated by these animals.

In the mid 1980's there were over 360, 000 in the wild. Sadly there are fewer than 3, 500 left on the African continent today, their population decimated due to poaching. This magnificent male is part of a re-introduction program that we have undertaken in partnership with the South African wildlife authorities aimed at relocating the animals into as many game reserves as possible. We have successfully re-introduced 19 black rhino at Zuka with 3 births already.

Thanks for viewing.

Henri, Azzo, Al & Peter- Thank you for your comments & encouragement, much appreciated!

Henri- Yes I am involved, with my focus being on the habitat side and in negotiating the availability of more land for these animals. After all this is the biggest issue right around the planet today; shrinking habitat due to ever-expanding human populations and the resultant loss of biodiversity.

Mike -

Superb as usual. If only the cultures that value the rhino horn and tiger penis medicinally would use something that works, such as viagra, perhaps these beauties would be allowed to live. Of course, then the human population would expand even more, encroahcing on more habitat....

Peter- Thank you for your comments, much appreciated.

Stuart- Thanks for your compliments. You're absolutely right. However we've taken a different approach where we're involving the surrounding local communities through employment & training within the game reserves. We also channel funds from tourism into schools, clinics and the provision of basic necessities. It's a kind of reward system whereby the locals benefit if the animals & habitat are protected. I'm pleased to say we're winning this one.

Takes a very long time............

Thanks again,

MIKE
