leicahk Posted February 13, 2008 Share #1 Â Posted February 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, Â I have had a Leica Digilux for over three years. I used it with great pleasure. Two years ago I took it with me on a long trip to Europe and the Far East; I live in New Zealand. Â Unfortunately last year the Sony sensor in the camera failed totally. Last week I received the camera back. Everything seemed to work perfectly again, but my heart sank in my shoes when I noticed that manual focusing was no longer accurate, putting the focusing ring on infinity no longer sets the lens at infinity. This is especially noticeable at a focal length of 28mm. Â I think that the sensor has not been installed and adjusted properly. Â Automatic focusing works accurately, but it can not always be used. Â I must say that I am rather dismayed and upset. The first repair took three months. I do not really want to wait that long again. I do not know what to do now. Â I do wonder if other people have had the same experience. Â I have always used Leica cameras, I still have two M3 cameras with a bunch of lenses etc,, Â hk

leicahk Posted February 13, 2008 Author Share #3  Posted February 13, 2008 Hi Stuart,  Thank you for your reply. I live in Christchurch. The importer of Leica equipment in NZ is called Lacklands, they are in Auckland, they probably have no repair facility. They sent the camera to Germany. That's why it took so long. I have sent an email to Leica in Germany, I am waiting for a reply. I could suggest to them to have the problem fixed in Melbourne, but I think that will be unlikely.  But I do hope that you will not have the same problem after the sensor replacement.  Kind regards  hk
Thomas Edwards Posted February 14, 2008 Share #4 Â Posted February 14, 2008 ...did you send the digi2 to germany? Â ...i had the sensor replaced in my digi2 in the states (new jersey facility), and they left dust on the new sensor...took another couple of months to rectify...for this and other reasons, i now have a bunch of leica digitals as back-ups. dugby Posted February 14, 2008 Share #5 Â Posted February 14, 2008 Hello hk. You got me curious about my own D2 that had it's sensor replaced March 2007. Â I appreciate your agony being isolated in Christchurch, i'm from the extreme west of the NZ's "West Island"........Perth. Â Anyway.... I only tend to user manual focus when I add the Macro lens element onto the front of the lens....I tend to use the AF. Â So, I tested both 90 and 28mm manual focus at distances from 20cm to Infinity. Â It was very easy to execute MF at 90mm for all distances. However it was very difficult to do any MF from about 8m to Infinity at 28mm....... almost everything seemed in focus all the time. (As to be expected with the D2's huge DOF) Â So I suspect there may well be an issue with your D2. Â FWIW.... i sent my D2 straight to Solms, after making email contact with Solms.....but it was still a 3month exercise despite avoiding the "meddle men"
leicahk Posted February 14, 2008 Author Share #6  Posted February 14, 2008 Hi Dugby,  Thank you for your reply. I visited Perth two years ago, we stayed for a week. I took hundreds of photos with my D2. I have written an email to Leica in Solms, sofar no reply as yet, I attached a bunch of photos. If they respond positively I may deal with them direct.    henk  photos speak for themselves
BillMaisey Posted February 14, 2008 Share #7  Posted February 14, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Henk  Mine does exactly the same since it's sensor was replaced in Germany via the UK. It also came back with dust in the LCD ..?? I use AF pretty much all the time so it's not a big issue for me.  I don't envisage ever selling my D2, it's such a gem of a camera. I don't understand why Leica didn't develop it further ...  Bill
leicahk Posted February 14, 2008 Author Share #8 Â Posted February 14, 2008 Hi there again, Â Thank you all those people for responding to my post. Â This morning I received a kind email from a Leica representative in Solms, he had discussed this problem with some technicians. They can not explain this problem. However since I told him that I would be in Melbourne in April he suggested to visit Adeal in Melbourne. They have a technician, who received training in Germany, who can check out the camera. So I will follow his advice. Â I really would not want another camera, it is so nice not to have to lug around a whole bunch of lenses. But I will have a look at the macro lens attachment. For my M3 I still have bellows and a reflex house for ultra close up. Â So I just have to be patient. Â henk
