Anyone own or use a Canon 1Ds Mk III yet?

I've just sold a 1 Ds Mk II to start up a fighting fund for the R10, assuming it is announced at photokina in September (availability is another matter of course).

In the event that the plan goes wrong though (no R10 / late R10 / bad R10 / unsuitable R10 / very, very expensive R10, lol) the full-frame dslr alternatives would seem to be the Canon 1Ds Mk III or Nikon D3, with the rumoured Canon 5D replacement and Nikon D3x as long shots.

The Nikon D3 has been covered extensively in these forums over recent weeks, but I'm wondering if anyone here has first-hand experience of the 1 Ds Mk III yet?

Steve,

I own one. It is spectacular. Major benefits are: 14 bit capture - you can see the difference in the files. More megapixels and worth it. New screen is much improved over the 1DsII. Menu is easier to use. Viewfinder is brighter and larger - easier to focus. Battery is lighter - significantly lighter. Longer use on the battery.

No downsides as far as I am concerned and you are using L glass. (24 1.4, 35 1.4 85 1.2, 135 2.0)

Nikon send me a D3 to test for a week. It is a stellar system. Truly a fantastic camera. I shot a magazine cover at ISO 3200 and was shocked at good it looked. I came very close to buying the Nikon and a few lenses.

I have shot with the camera and its younger brother (the 1d Mark III) for about six weeks. I am very pleased with both of them and see nothing negative to report.

Hope this helps.

Cameron,

Thanks for your insight. Having handled the 1 Ds III briefly I'd certainly agree with you about the weight, I was surprised that the difference was so noticeable.
