Trevor Hare Posted September 2, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I take delivery of my new Panasonic DMC-FX01 will I be able to post questions about it/post photographs taken with it? It is supposed to be identical to the Leica C-Lux1 in all but cosmetic appearance. In preparation I have just downloaded the noise profiles for the FX01 for my Noise Ninja plug in and bought a 1gb Sandisk card. Will get it on Monday or Tuesday I hope. Advertisement Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Hi Trevor Hare, Take a look here Panasonic FX01. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
burkey Posted September 2, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 2, 2006 Thanks. I have a CLUX1 and would enjoy seeing what the plug-ins do for the images. BTW, the camera is at Leica in NJ right now. The unpredictable over exposure in the high values, particularly when using fill flash, became too much to deal with. Some of the images I got from it were exceptional, others such as simple family pics were really bad even with a -EV in place.
stuny Posted September 2, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 2, 2006 Trevor - I have the FX01, which Barbara gave to me, along with the underwater enclosure and flash to replace our underwater, non-Lieca film gear -- Much smaller and lighter with the FX01 set-up. I've been carrying it with me frequently to work and when walking about town on the weekends, and have gotten rather good resutls with it (the last 18 pictures on the 3rd New York page of our site are from teh FX01). within its limitations it is a remarkable camera. Regarding David's comment about overexposure, I seldom use the flash, and have set the camera to 2/3 ISO underexposure for all shooting.
Trevor Hare Posted September 2, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted September 2, 2006 Thanks for the overexposure warning. I will bracket some of my test shots (when I get it) to see if my camera exhibits this trait. (Is there flash compensation also?) I have read somewhere that the adverse noise reduction software effects at higher ISO speeds are not nearly as bad if a smaller image size is selected (2048 x 1536 for instance). Can anyone verify this whilst I am impatiently waiting until my camera arrives?
burkey Posted September 3, 2006 Share #5 Posted September 3, 2006 Trevor, Aside from my "doom and gloom" rap about my CLUX being at Leica for a "tweak", many things the LX/CLUX does is truly remarkable for a point and shoot. Take a look at some of Stuart's work. "Top shelf" to say the least. I've attached a grab shot with the CLUX, (available light), I took at my brother in law's wedding over the summer. Very slow shutter speed too. Minor CS work in post. 'Not what I would expect for a pocket digital. They do shoot hot, something that's had a bit of press here on the forum before. But with a minus -EV as a given I think you'll be pretty satisfied. Good luck. . . . David Welcome, dear visitor! Trevor Hare Posted September 3, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted September 3, 2006 Nice photo. Thanks. OK the concensus seems to be to run this at -2/3 of a stop in bright light. How about in low light? Do you leave the exposure compensation then? Sorry for the questions. Best to try all this myself but, as I said, I am still awaiting delivery. (I have just been e-mailed to say the camera was despatched one hour ago and was given a tracking number.) In the meantime I am learning quite a bit from various sites and have been experimenting with Noise Ninja FX01 profiles on full size sample ISO 400 and ISO 200 images from Dpreview. Trevor Hare Posted September 3, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted September 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) As always the frustration when getting a new digicam is the time it takes to charge up the battery before the fun begins! I always spend that time with the instruction manual to get the basics sorted out.
burkey Posted September 3, 2006 Share #8 Posted September 3, 2006 I toggle between -EV when it's contrasty and bright but for low light stuff I bring it back to 0 for the EV setting. If you haven't done so already I'd do some CLUX and/or FX searches here. I think you'll find some very useful discussions about this camera.
Trevor Hare Posted September 3, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted September 3, 2006 Yes I read this thread already... http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/1219-clux-1-exposure.html?highlight=c-lux1 and got some ideas.
Trevor Hare Posted September 4, 2006 Author Share #10 Posted September 4, 2006 Got the camera today. Nice build. Smaller than I expected. Easy to use. -2/3 ev is the way to go outdoors in good light. Beyond charging battery/buying case and reading instructions I only managed to test a few shots today.... Welcome, dear visitor! Trevor Hare Posted September 4, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted September 4, 2006 Please forgive the 'tint' due to bright sunlight coming directly through a bright yellow canopy above the people. I am not in the business of correcting for reality.
Trevor Hare Posted September 4, 2006 Author Share #15 Posted September 4, 2006 No-one took any notice of the camera and I have de-programmed all the bells and whistles so it is silent in operation. It is a very discrete little camera. I will go a little further afield with tomorrow (weather permitting) and post some in the photo forum if I have any success. (Better than just tests shots like those today I hope)
burkey Posted September 4, 2006 Share #16 Posted September 4, 2006 Nice first shots, Trevor. I really like the shot of the windows. Have you printed any yet? BTW, Boston?
Trevor Hare Posted September 4, 2006 Author Share #17 Posted September 4, 2006 David, thanks. No not Boston. Portsmouth, England. Old England not New England :-) I dont print my own. I prepare full size print files on PS then use PhotoBox - award-winning 5p prints + FREE online photo albums for sharing (Fuji Frontier on Crystal Archive paper) they are very good. Files sent off before about 3pm are on my doorstep 1st thing next morning. Far more reasonable cost than home printing and get proper photos (lightjet printed) rather than home prints (inks). I had my eldest daughter's graduation photos printed this way on 10x7 and 12x8 and 7x5 (used the pro service on the 12x8s where everything is hand inspected) and the results were superb. (Mixture of D70 RAW shots and Leica + CV 40mm + Reala film shots scanned by myself on Nikon Coolscan V)
Trevor Hare Posted September 4, 2006 Author Share #18 Posted September 4, 2006 I also use Fuji slide film in the M6 and buy it from Fujilab UK and get them to dev & mount also. Takes about 3 days.
Trevor Hare Posted September 4, 2006 Author Share #19 Posted September 4, 2006 Sorry about what happened there. The photobox URL resolved itself into an advert! (No I don't work for them) Back on topic. The purpose of the Panasonix DMC-FX01 is a casual, carry anytime, P&S mostly for web shots. I doubt if more than a very few will end up on full sized prints. Just a fun cam really. When I get serious the M6/Nokton and/or D70 are brought out.
stuny Posted September 4, 2006 Share #20 Posted September 4, 2006 Trevor - congratulations on the purchase and your early successes with the camera. I'm sure you'll like it a lot.
