andybarton Posted January 31, 2008 Share #4 Posted January 31, 2008 Looks like a 3-series to me
stuny Posted February 1, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 1, 2008 It does seem very unlikely, for cost and performance reasons, to be racing a pack of 7 series. Also the fastest Pentax I've ever seen.
davidmires Posted February 1, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 1, 2008 I love how I can see the driver's eyes, looking into the mirror. Nice shot, I'll bet a print would look great.
elansprint72 Posted February 1, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted February 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks chaps. It is indeed a 7 Series; this is from the days before the M3 etc. had been thought of and the fastest way to go was either 635 or 735, the former was not allowed in this class. The other cars in shot are Ford Capri 3 ltrs, other prime contenders would have been the Opel Commodore or Triumph Dolomite Sprint, which although only 2 ltr, often upset the big-guns. wizard Posted February 1, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 1, 2008 Very nice shot, Pete, you caught the action very well! To do the leading car justice though, it is definitely a 5-series BMW. The first 5-series, to be precise. Don't remember exactly when they were released, could be around 1972. The first 7-series BMW (which would be the only one that could be mistaken for the 5-series) had dual headlamps of differing size, the outer low beam units had a larger diameter than the inner high beam units. Lateron, when the first 5-series were face lifted, the same setup was also used on the 5-series. The one shown on your photo is thus an early model. Cheers, Andy
andybarton Posted February 1, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 1, 2008 Definitely doesn't look wide enough for a 7-series. I drove a 735i for a couple of weeks once and they were monsters
m_opel Posted February 1, 2008 Share #10 Posted February 1, 2008 It's not a 7 series, it's a 5 series E12... and according to the rearview mirrors a very early one.
Marquinius Posted February 1, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 1, 2008 Pete, Very apt title and I'm sure some moderator will have had second thoughts before he saw the picture! Now the question: who would go and race in a BMW 7 series? Yes it has good engine/wheels and such, but to RACE? Perhaps duelling a Scania or International Marco
stuny Posted February 1, 2008 Share #12 Posted February 1, 2008 Marco is correct. Before seeing the image I wondered if Taylor had lost it.
elansprint72 Posted February 1, 2008 Author Share #13 Posted February 1, 2008 All wrong! BMW E23 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
andybarton Posted February 1, 2008 Share #14 Posted February 1, 2008 But, your photo is not of an E23 7-series. It's not wide enough. It's not much wider than the Escort or Capri - and the latter was a narrow car. I bet you've got the race card somewhere
m_opel Posted February 1, 2008 Share #15 Posted February 1, 2008 All wrong! BMW E23 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Well... you're wrong. Have a look at size of the headlights (E23: outer ones are bigger, E12: equal size) and the position of the indicators/turn signals. elansprint72 Posted February 1, 2008 Author Share #16 Posted February 1, 2008 Well, I have spoken to The Man Who Knows and he says that I'm wrong too! However, he reckons that Walkinshaw had an early 728 painted up in the Pentax colours before the two 5 series cars were ready, and because of my very advanced age, I have confused the two. I can't find a shot of a pre-facelift E23 to see what that would have looked like. At this time Walkinshaw was license building Alpinas in the UK, some of which made rather unwieldy track machines. Of course he later went to prison and is now in Australia, with a lot of other ex-convicts. In this shot you can clearly see that the car is a 5 series, apoligies. Marquinius Posted February 1, 2008 Share #17 Posted February 1, 2008 Oh well, it's still Beemers ... now it was an Audi 2.5 TDI Quattro ... it would win Le Mans. Had one for 3 years. Man ... !
