Despite the experience of others, for me the new shutter sound has eliminated from consideration the M8 for many things I enjoy shooting (church ceremonies from the pews, etc.). I'd love to see images shot hand held at very low speeds and see if there is a difference. Regards, Bill Yeah, it's tough to evaluate this on the laptop. Even looking at the waveforms (which seem to indicate about a 40% attenuation) I still always end up mentally comparing the quieter shutter with the sound of a 1200-euro-thick wad of cash hitting my desk... Certainly not decibels or anything else I'm familiar with. Leica seem to have invented their own standard of test comparison, whereby the new shutter is something like a quarter as loud as the original. Play the files, though, and it's clearly not... But if they did that it'd be a free firmware upgrade and no need to replace the shutter I'm even more suspicious now that quieting-down the shutter is the result of some added insulation, not the new shutter, which Leica had an entirely different reason for switching. I thought to myself : What's the fuzz? It's silent... HOWEVER, first time I actually clicked the shutter of an M8, the SOUND was there. Katchoinngg!!! ndjambrose Posted January 31, 2008 Share #16 Posted January 31, 2008 I don't think the difference is that dramatic. Agreed - there's a slight lessening of noise, but it's hardly super quiet. To my ears it's exactly the same sound, but with slightly lesser amplification -- rather like standing an extra 5 feet away from the camera. (This conclusion drawn from my less-than-scientific workbench of listening in a silent room using fairly high quality headphones. I had to have a new shutter and so did several other forum members, after 'dings' appeared on the shutter blades. BTW - I mean appeared, NOTHING was ever shoved into the camera. When I discussed the issue with Leica this was not something that was an isolated case. I think if there is a new shutter, it's a good thing. newyorkone Posted January 31, 2008 Share #20 Posted January 31, 2008 Based on the mp3's (which is far from a live assessment, but that's all we have for now) I don't think the reduction in sound is worth 1200 EUROS/~$1800. However, I can also tell from listening that there is definitely an extensive reduction in vibration which is what has always bothered me more about the original M8 shutter than the sound. I always wondered why I couldn't get hand held shots at the low shutter speeds that I could get with my M6 and have always suspected the shutter vibration. I think it is now safe to say that Leica has confirmed and admitted to such a problem with the original M8 shutter. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
