psquared Posted January 30, 2008 Share #1 Â Posted January 30, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yesterday was a good day at Bolsa Chica. I was able to get pictures of a variety of birds at this Huntington Beach, California, ecological reserve. Although this woodpecker is relatively common, this was the first time I saw this species as I'm relatively new to birding. stuny Posted January 30, 2008 Share #3 Â Posted January 30, 2008 Peter - Â Superb! Perfect composition, light, details, color and bokeh. Â BTW: My raptor rescuing friend (I sometimes refer to her as "Ladyhawk") loved your kite photos. I'll be sending her this one. In return she sent me two lovely photos of cedar waxwings along with an explanation for the red on their wings and the yellow on their tails.

psquared Posted January 31, 2008 Author Share #6 Â Posted January 31, 2008 Theo, Stuart, Albert, and Henri, Â Thank you very, very much. Â Stuart, please thank Ladyhawk for me. BTW, how do the waxwings develop those red and yellow patches? Â Henri, you usually need good patience for bird pictures. But, sometimes you need decisive, quick action. This case turned out to be the latter. I saw this bird while I was on the move. I had to put the tripod down quietly and in a hurry, position the camera, focus, steady my breathing and hands, and shoot. I was able to get two shots off before it flew away. Luckily I got this nice one. Â Peter
