Yesterday was a good day at Bolsa Chica. I was able to get pictures of a variety of birds at this Huntington Beach, California, ecological reserve. Although this woodpecker is relatively common, this was the first time I saw this species as I'm relatively new to birding.

Thanks for looking,

Peter -

Superb! Perfect composition, light, details, color and bokeh.

BTW: My raptor rescuing friend (I sometimes refer to her as "Ladyhawk") loved your kite photos. I'll be sending her this one. In return she sent me two lovely photos of cedar waxwings along with an explanation for the red on their wings and the yellow on their tails.

Theo, Stuart, Albert, and Henri,

Thank you very, very much.

Stuart, please thank Ladyhawk for me. BTW, how do the waxwings develop those red and yellow patches?

Henri, you usually need good patience for bird pictures. But, sometimes you need decisive, quick action. This case turned out to be the latter. I saw this bird while I was on the move. I had to put the tripod down quietly and in a hurry, position the camera, focus, steady my breathing and hands, and shoot. I was able to get two shots off before it flew away. Luckily I got this nice one.

I love the breast feather pattern ...very dapper!

having done some birds myself, I really appreciated your commentary on how you took this

that bird was clearly eyeing you & I am not surprised that you only got two shots off before it fled

very fine capture
