jrh68uk Posted January 24, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I've just noticed, on my newly-acquired M7 (294xxxx), that there are two new specks of dust on the inside of the front viewfinder window. When I bought it, there was just one tiny one which was hardly visible. It doesn't matter too much, at this stage, but I'm concerned that dust will build up in there quickly, as I've not even had chance to finish the first test film yet! I've read a lot about early M7s and viewfinder sealing, but mine is a later model. Also, reported problems seem to relate to the viewfinder eyepiece, yet my dust is on the inside of the front window. I thought that the sealing of current models' viewfinders would prevent dust from getting in. Should I be watching out for anything in particular? Cheers, Jason
Advertisement Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Hi jrh68uk, Take a look here How sealed is sealed?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest tummydoc Posted January 24, 2008 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2008 The early M7 has the better-sealed eyepiece (threaded). The later (from the end of the first year, when production began on the MP) M7 has the poorly-designed eyepiece (held by three tiny screws with a 2mm open gap at 9 o'clock that is hidden by the rubber protector). Leica began to apply adhesive sealant to the eyepiece as a band-aid "fix" once the public discovered it (as some might say the IR filters are a band-aid fix for the insufficient IR filter on the M8's sensor, also discovered by the unsuspecting buyers after the fact) but the possibility for dust incursion still exists. Usually the dust adheres to the rear eyepiece due to static electricity, but it isn't impossible for some of it to make its way to the front inside glass. rob_x2004 Posted January 25, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 25, 2008 The Ms arent particularly well sealed anywhere. I dont think it is worth worrying about too much. The spec could even have been in there from assembly. After a year or so and you get your CLA service you will go "Wow! It wasnt even that clear when I bought it" Welcome to the forum. Look forward to seeing your stuff.
jrh68uk Posted January 25, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted January 25, 2008 Thanks, guys. You're quite right: after further research it seems I'd misunderstood what I'd first read. I shan't worry about it, then, since it's obviously a generic issue and not just a problem with my particular M7. Thanks for allaying my fears! Really enjoying my introduction to the M system and to this forum. Cheers, Jason
rob_x2004 Posted January 25, 2008 Share #5 Posted January 25, 2008 Yea Leica still make their cameras like it is the ninteen thirties, but their lenses....You are going to have a good time. Some might say enjoy the ride but that sounds a bit ... iccky to me:D. M7, it will all be good fun.
