When did Leica stop offering upgrades for the LTM series? I'm pretty sure I have seen older bodies that were upgraded to IIIf spec.

Perhaps this camera was upgraded in the post war period? That may explain a lot of the more modern parts. They also would have plugged the hole in the back. Can you take a peek inside and see if there is a plug or something?

no, you could not have seen older Cameras with upgrade to IIIf ....it was only posible to upgrade to a IIIa syn...

Jan

So possibly it is a model C which has been restored at some point, fitted with a new shutter dial and a later style rewind knob - maybe because the original items were showing wear/brassing and wouldn't look right on a repainted body.

But that still leaves the question of the lens mount, which should have the 0 engraved as the lens and body numbers don't match?

Interesting stuff.

..no, the change was done later in the 50th I thing...

1. The Nr....not No

2. shutter speed knop..

so the camera do not have a "O" ...

But the Flash/Finder holder is a old one of a I standard (E) or II......

Quit rar is that the camera was not changed to II...

It can be that the flange and lens where changed, apart the thread fitting the second factor is the distance from the front face of the flange to the pressure film, it was adjusted with paper shims of different thickness in between the body and the flange rear face.

Curiouser and curiouser.......

Maybe then Gunnar has a 1c which - for whatever reason - was 'upgraded' to Standard E spec (production of which ran throught til 1950) after WW11, fitted with the new dial/knob/flange and a new top plate, engraved with the original number, and the engraver used the then current Nr prefix?

I think at that time it was not so easy to get parts..;) ..so the second number is the "second" camera....

If Gunnar can tell us if the parts are nickel or chome...and I think they are chrome!...was the reason to giff the second number to the "paper of control"....

that means, that they do not repair Leica I (like this one) for shure...because of missing parts..

so it makes it more clear for the "second camera"..

sorry for my english!...:(

You will find two cameras from 1927, both are Leica Standard

and both are modified in the factory ar Wetzlar according to the

paper telewatt shows us, the second one (Nr 3881) not later than

1950 (shark skin), the first one (No 2812) not earlier than 1952

(«GMBH»). The first one is new painted at about 1952 or later,

the second one not, the first one has «Nr» at its new cap, the

second one «Nr», both are nickel not chrome, the second one

is a IIIa syn, both lack the aperture at the back:

The camera I bought with a Summar, but it was fault, and

now I use a late Summitar.

The second one you saw at Munich the last year in July.

Wading into this debate a little late - there are two possible explanations for the provenance of this camera.

As far as I can tell, there a few ‘irregularities’ on this Leica. First of all, the black finish is quite glossy for a camera of this vintage. Secondly, all identification info has been engraved and filled with white paint; early Leicas had this information etched into the bodies. Also, the fittings on the camera are chrome, not nickel as they should be on a 1930/31 vintage Leica. The Delivery Certificate looks to me as one that came with much later cameras - probably post 1940’s. There could be few other oddities but, those are probably the most obvious ones.

So - these, IMHO, are the two possible explanations.

  • Very late factory conversion.
  • Camera rebuilt or re-finished either by Leitz or an independent party.

The delivery certificate has two numbers - 34314 and 62986. Both are Leica I models, the second one possibly a standardized (or non-standard?) lens mount version.

The engraved and white-filled identification would indicate either a relatively late factory conversion or, a re-finished camera. If this was a late factory conversion, the two serial numbers do not make sense; converted cameras got to keep their original serial number - why does this camera have two serial numbers (at least from what I can see - on the delivery certificate)?

The fact that there is no ‘0’ engraved on the flange would lead to an assumption that the conversion was relatively late, because Leitz stopped engraving the ‘0’ once all cameras had standardized lens mounts. Serial number of the lens would also help with solving this mystery. If the lens has no serial number, it would indicate that it came originally with a Model I and was converted into a standardized mount.

Nevertheless - it is a gorgeous camera.

Best,

Jan

Hello Jan,

I do not see a serial number at the objektiv and Leitz did a lot of changing with lenses too..

You could get changing of feet to meter and new barrel!...for Hector the price was 38,- DM..

regards,

Jan...;)

..the change to standardized was Nr.60500....

intersting discussion and nice camera :) ,

for me it's an at Leitz Wetzlar converted camera, becaus of the following issues:

-change of No to Nr

-no 0-engraving

-diff. Shuter-knob

but basically because of the missing aperture/window on the back-side of the camera.

All thos facts indicate, that the body has been exchanged or rebuilt with existing parts of that time.

A complete rebuilt by the E. Leitz Customer Service was an usual act, as diskussed earlier.

Thanks for showing the camera and the nice pictures.
