stuny Posted January 14, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) The brown hyena, a desert dweller in southern Africa, is very cautious, and seldom seen. It is smaller and far less aggressive than the more common spotted hyena. We were lucky enough to see four of them (one in Namibia and three in Botswana). This pregnant female, no doubt late for an obstetrical appointment, passed close enough to photograph on the vast salt pans in the Kalahari. Notice the markings on her front legs, which are characteristic of the species. To see the other three visit the 5th page of Namibia photo galleries and the third page of Botswana photo galleries on our site.
Advertisement Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Hi stuny, Take a look here Wearing argyle socks . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Marquinius Posted January 14, 2008 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2008 Stuart, What is it that makes these animals so scary? This shot is picture perfect sharp, so I guess you weren't toting an M8 with 15mm attached ... taking into account that it still is an animal you'd want to keep some distance from:D Marco
roguewave Posted January 14, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 14, 2008 Stu, I'm suprised you didn't hail her a cab & get her to the appointment on time.
michali Posted January 14, 2008 Share #4 Posted January 14, 2008 Stuart- Sharp detail of a very elusive & shy animal. In over 30 years of running around Africa I've only seen them 4 or 5 times. You're very privileged to have seen one, let alone to have the chance to photograph one. Marco- I can assure you it will break the land speed record in trying to get away from you if you try & approach it. Please don't take this personally! azzo Posted January 14, 2008 Share #5 Posted January 14, 2008 Stuart, IMHO...a terrific and spot on capture. Well Done. Azzo
stuny Posted January 14, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted January 14, 2008 Marco - Thank you. Actually, the first one we saw, on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, was a nearly grown young one that didn't look at all scary, and seemed to be wearing a cheap, blonde wig. It did not slink with its head down as we see here. This is also the way Disney Studios draws wolves to look so scary, with sloping hind quarters and head down. Ben - Thank you. How insensitive of me not to have hailed a taxi. Since it wasn't raining there was a good chance we could have caught one. Mike & Ivan - Thank you. Marquinius Posted January 15, 2008 Share #8 Posted January 15, 2008 Stuart: I agree that a lot of the image of wolves/hyena's/whatever is put in a negative daylight by the media (as is most of the stuff we hear and see of the rest of the world: it seems like a good advice to keep in mind "where's the money" at all times) Mike: no offense taken and hey, even if it was only running away from me, I could go in showbusiness ... mark_goode Posted January 15, 2008 Share #9 Posted January 15, 2008 Stuart - I find the image haunting. It's almost as if he is prowling on a sheet of ice; the colors are interesting too with the almost golden fur juxtaposed against the stark gray of the ground. Lovely image that leaves me a bit on edge . . .
stuny Posted January 15, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted January 15, 2008 Peter & mark - Thank you. Marco - It is a shame the bad, unjustified reputation many animals get. Wolves, bats and sharks are among the most unfairly treated.

psquared Posted January 22, 2008 Share #14 Posted January 22, 2008 Stuart, A great capture. She looks exhausted and thirsty on parched salt flats with the sun bearing down. Peter
spylaw4 Posted January 22, 2008 Share #15 Posted January 22, 2008 A great and fascinating image Stuart - with a real touch of menace about it, even allowing for Mike's comment about avoiding confrontation!
USHELDON Posted January 22, 2008 Share #16 Posted January 22, 2008 Stuart, Fantastic pic. Brown hyena are very mysterious and less seen than their spotted couterparts. Great detail Sheldon.
