Advice before selling my MP body

Hi all! First of all, I wish you all happy holidays.

Unfortunately, I have to sell my MP. It has something that makes it a bit unique: the engraving “Made in Germany” is incorrect and actually reads “Made in Ermany.”

I’m curious to know whether this kind of engraving error means anything in the Leica world, or if it’s simply a mistake with no particular value. Of course, I will point this out to any interested buyer who hasn’t noticed it, but I would first like to know if this is something collectors might be interested in.

I have no idea what the answer may be but how was it explained to you when you came into this camera?

I find it hard to believe that the factory would have let this pass QC but what do I know..

It seems a bit bizarre to me that anyone would pay a premium for this kind of mistake, but I am not a collector. To be honest, it would give me a bit of pause and make me suspect the rest of the camera might not be well quality controlled either. I wonder if Leica might just fix this for free, if you were to send it back to them...my guess is that they might. It is a pretty embarrassing error.

Not surprising at all. That would be a lesser mistake than the majority of what I’ve received in new camera boxes over the years. 

To the OP, I’d send it back to Leica to make right. I can’t fathom why it would be worth more, but there are wealthy folks aplenty in Leicaland willing to pay more to buy something that does nothing different but looks slightly different.

My SL2 came with a similar error out of the box. I sent it back to them to make it right and check the whole thing.
 

They did it for “free”, meaning they didn’t charge me more to make the thing I ordered match the product description I paid for, but of course did not compensate me for borrowing my camera for 12 weeks or whatever it was, I can’t remember. Good for Leica turnaround terrible compared to other brands. In the end, this still cost me. Which is what Leica will do of course.

Cesc,   I can understand your concern and agree with both Stuart and PGH posts.  If you don't want to send it in and get Leica to fix it, you could simply advertise the camera was made in the new country of Ermany.   Most don't know geography these days and someone might grab it before Ermany decides to rename itself to Germany.  Just my 2 cents.  Happy Holidays!  r/ Mark

How long have you owned it? I can't see Leica correcting that problem unless it's under warranty. I would contact them though, tell them the spelling issue and you want proof of the error so you can sell it without someone claiming it's a counterfeit

Some engraving errors add value to a camera or lens, etc. when they are sold. Others do not.

Even tho this is not an old camera: It maybe worthwhile to ask this question in the  "Collectors & Historica" section below this section on the main pge of the Forum.

I am surprised that your dealer didn't swap it out immediately, or refund your money. That's what any legitimate dealer would do, regardless of brand.

I'm curious as you enquired about this 18+ months ago, according to your original post you've owned the camera since November 2023 so I wonder what have you discovered in this period of ownership regarding the ERMANY issue.

My dealer offered to, but their order delay was about the same as repair at the time. I also knew the camera worked otherwise, and given my history of new cameras with Leica I knew it a better probability of getting what I paid for to get that fixed. It was only cosmetic.
