The 28 Summilux is dead. Long live the 35 Summilux!

I sold my mint 28 Lux. Lovely lens but 28 is just not my thing. Glad to have tried the legend though!

Bought a silver 35 Summilux FLE 1. Ex display at the Leica distributor in Auckland. Complete, unused as far as I can tell and still with full new 2 year warranty. And 39% cheaper than the FLE2.

I did the same, not intentionally, sold the 28 Summilux from the closet where it sat unused for a good while.  Wide but not wide enough to be dramatic.  The silver 35 summilux was traded for the newer ver. 2 by the previous owner and was sitting on the used shelf at the Leica store.  I admired  the lens for its beautiful design since introduction and the silver version more so.  After a few shots to evaluate it for imaging and good mechanics the store held it for me until I returned with my M to determine if they played well together.  They did and as you state the prices on  used are exceptionally low (for Leica).  For many years the 35 Summilux FLE was the poster child for Leica price increases due to popularity, so it was a bit surprising to see it fall precipitously with the release of ver. 2.  I don’t doubt that many were traded in and the store had a good supply of used, lowering the price.  This also happened with the M10 Monochrom, a good price on used with the release of the M11m.  After trying one that had issues, the nice sales person brought out four additional bodies to test.

It certainly is a very nice lens.

In 27 years of using M cameras this is the first silver lens I’ve ever owned. Originally that was a cost thing because the brass/chrome lenses were noticeably more than the black ones.

Oddly enough the silver ones are still more expensive than the black lenses despite both being anodised aluminium, although only a little.

Kiwimac, congratulations on the new lens, looks the part on your Safari.

I've used this lens extensively for the past 10 years and loved every result from it.
Enjoy it!.

Thanks. Yes it seems very good and I like the rendering.

I had and foolishly sold the Apo Cron but this lens was half the cost of one of those and, brilliant as the Apo is, it’s not twice as good as this.

I watched several tests on YT comparing them and the improvements boil down to the Apo being a bit more compact, giving a very slight edge in micro contrast, reducing CAa lot and having closer focus.

Like the Apo 50, there is a certain je ne sais quoi in the Apo 35 - it’s somehow as if the air between the camera and subject became more clear, if you see what I mean.

However I think this lens offers equally good rendering, simply a different palette and interpretation.

Dude, you need to sell this obnoxious silver one and get a safari one, which would be probably only 50% more expensive. :D

I actually prefer the design of this one - If I found a Safari in this style I’d buy it. Maybe one day I’ll send it away to Skyllaney and have it repainted as a Safari!

I don’t like the design of the newer lenses with the built in hoods: they look short and fat!

I recently acquired the 35 APO and your description describes my thoughts exactly. I was originally tempted by a FLE II for the close focus, but opted to keep my original FLE and add the APO close focus instead. There is absolutely no sane logic as to why I made that decision, I should have just swapped FLE for FLE II. Anyway it's early days yet, I'm loving that new crispness the APO brings on the M11M.

The hidden beauty of silver or chrome is that when the time comes to move on from an older Safari camera, you are not so limited to staying green🙃.
The more I see the Green on Green, I'm thinking it's more military looking, rather than Safari.

Thanks! I saw the second lens cap at the bottom but hadn’t realised there was a silver finishing ring beneath the cap!

It looks great with the ring in place. How necessary is the hood in daily life?

I stepped over to another lenshood. In fact a hood from Summarit-M 35/50mm. It think it is just a tad more good looking. At least the lens is more shaded.  [I can't find a picture quickly] It does not interfere with the beautiful bookeh.

I saw that Squarehood makes them too.

Right. I owned the newest Summicron which I also loved as such. The thing was that I began to crop more and more. I'm just not looking otherwise than with 35mm angle. The 50 is also being used rarely.
