What a nice combination of the green leather and black paint. Love it! 😍

It sounds like the difference is between a limited run and a limited edition. Most Leica gear is made in production runs of a certain number of items. In this case, 500. But if they sell out quickly, it seems like Leica would just make another production run. In a limited edition, however, the items would be numbered with the number they are in the series. It does not appear that they have done that here. So while there is no guarantee Leica will make another production run, it does not seem like they have ruled out producing more to keep up with demand. It seems like Leica has been pushing more and more of these aesthetic options as a way to sell more lenses without developing new formulas or new bodies, so I think we can expect them to continue to offer them for at least a while.

You are possibly right. As I stated the number of 500 items, I want to give some clarity where I got this figure from. While showing my interest for the lens I asked the sales person whether the edition is limited and to which number. She could not give me a figure and went to the back office to ask. She came back and told me the number of 500 items. That means you can trust the number as much as you can trust the words of this unknown person back behind closed door. I have not seen any official number by Leica. Nevertheless, I bought the lens in full confidence that I will enjoy it independently on how many other fellows will enjoy it somewhere else in the world.

I’ve asked our dealer to see if he gets the same info.

Amazing that people already have it in hand and we don’t have a single one on the country yet!

Our distributor is ‘beneath’ Leica Australia, because there’s no ‘Leica New Zealand’ so we tend to get things later because Australia gets the stock and we get what they’ll let us have.

Beautiful lens!

I was once persuaded by the Summilux BC, which was supposed to be a limited edition, until they produced more because of demand. Time will tell for this GB version.

P.S. I sold the BC, far too heavy on my M.

That summilux 50/1.4 black chrome so called limited edition is completely a sham.

Nowadays you can even find one which is cheaper than standard silver or black version.

I think the main thing is that if they put a number on the lens (like 117/500, 1 of 200 etc), then they are probably legally bound to limit it to that number. If they don't put any number on the lens or body, then I think they can do more or less whatever they want unless they say that it is limited to 500 AND they will produce no more. "Limited edition" doesn't really mean much on its own, even if they say they are going to produce 500 of them. Likewise, many of the most valuable Leica lenses were not limited edition, they just happened to be produced on very small quantities and then not made again. Ultimately this is about what will make Leica the most money. If they sell all of these out in a few months, I would not be surprised at all if they offer them again sooner or later.

Only issue it that I have the 11817 already and I am thinking of selling it.

Call yourself a Leica fan! You need at least three versions of each focal length. You know that this is the way.

I've been sitting here reading the thread, in two minds about the Summilux BP.
I'm not one for buying new, or paying extra for special editions when the standard gives the same result.
Even more so Black Paint, it's soft finish marked by the slightest knock, yet use imparts patina, resale values possibly higher for pristine copies in later years.

Yep!, GAS rises to the forefront again, I happen to like the look of this, price is reasonable, delivery 3-5 days, Christmas present to myself ... best type of present 🤭.
I just can't do it, I don't like the rendering of its silver sibling and I'm well served with V1 & V2 Summilux Asph and 50mm is not in my regular rotation ATM.

It's hardly worth buying and leaving it unopened for a few years, is it?.

I'm only kidding myself, it's the old want vs need, I've no need, but strangely the want is strong but also illogical.
I think it's time for me to go out and shoot... to clear the mind .

Really? I bought a black chrome 50 Summilux (loved the red lettering) but later purchased the close-focus current lens. I don't sense that the BC is substantially heavier. BTW the new 50 has a little more resolution.

which photo's green color is more true to life?  the green colors are so different in these photos, not only the lenses, but also the safari bodies.

The one that was linked is an actual black paint original from 1966. Rare as hen’s teeth I believe.

How they got these product shots through is beyond me... a photo-centric company unable to color match their products is unacceptable at this level haha.

Or still actively using twenty year old images for marketing.

Today the MP, still showing the 50mm pre-aspherical Summilux v3 , which likely ceased production in 2003.
