So far, 57 and repaired numerous times, once extremely seriously. But for that repair 20 years ago I’d be long gone. So far, men in my family have died between 75 and 80. So if my cameras last 20 years I guess that might be enough. Maybe not even that long. 😳

DavidJohn Posted November 22 Share #22 Posted November 22 Get shooting and enjoy this magnificent hobby/vocation. Get the best equipment your bank account will support. If you're concerned about spending money on cameras, purchase a less expensive one. It really doesn't matter if you're using a 15-year-old Fuji, GR or Pentax...or a brand new Hasselblad, Leica or Technical Camera—you can experience the passion, the fun, communicate, whatever you want, just as well.

There are lots of way to vaporize money in this world, don't be ashamed that your kids will talk about grandpa's camera collection. A saying I've heard is "fly first class-- or your kids will..." They probably will anyway.

Totally agree. Been on the planet 50 years before the smartphone, and though handy it hasn’t really impacted my life. I feel sorry for the young people I see that spend a huge part of their waking hours with a 5” screen glued to their face.
rxj Posted November 22 Share #26 Posted November 22 Life is short, buy what you like if it's something you really want and enjoy it. I've had my Q2 since late 2019 and 42300 photos and taken it to 7 countries and it's still going strong with no issues. Yes it has marks and scratches and chips but it works well and will continue to use it. That's 6 years. If it decides to fail tomorrow, I'll look to buy another camera as I feel i got out of it what I wanted. Things will fail / wear out eventually. Tech moves on and life moves on. It's a fixed lens camera. YMMV. 3

I’m wholly in agreement. In fact I’m on record as saying that I believe that the internet itself is the single greatest act of self-harm that humanity has ever committed.
Kiwimac Posted Sunday at 09:29 PM Author Share #28 Posted Sunday at 09:29 PM (edited) I came across a post on Reddit that pertains to this discussion. Here’s a quote (it’s an original Q): “entually it shut down. I knew it didn’t have full weather sealing, so I thoroughly dried it, removed the battery, and so on. Unfortunately, it never came back to life. I sent it via the Leica store in Amsterdam to Leica. That always takes some time. But eventually, I got the message that it couldn’t be repaired because the parts are no longer available.” Edited Sunday at 09:30 PM by Kiwimac
Aram Langhans Posted Monday at 03:11 AM Share #29 Posted Monday at 03:11 AM What is the life of a Q3? Let me tell you. It is miserable. My owner just works be to death. He expects me to ready at a moment's notice, rain or shine. Morning, afternoon, evening, night. Works me until I die, then he slaps a new battery in me and I am off again....... I think this might qualify as slavery, but he does not let me communicate with other cameras to find out. So, that is my life. I am told because of the quality of my construction and weather sealing, it will be a long life. A long, miserable life. My advice to other Q3's? HIDE.................. 2
kkochheiser Posted Monday at 03:30 AM Share #30 Posted Monday at 03:30 AM Honestly, if you’re looking for a camera to use for the next 20 years, your best Leica choice would be either the M-A or maybe the M-P depending on how you feel about light meter longevity. I’m betting they will still make 35mm film. Me, I’ll probably be gone or no longer able to shoot before then, so I’ll just use what I enjoy, currently Q3s and M11s. Have fun and go shoot.
