wwdwgs Posted 7 hours ago Share #1 Â Posted 7 hours ago Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, everyone. I'm new to this forum and new to any lens repair. I have "used and abused" 1939 "pancake" Elmar 3.5cm lens. It's aperture ring is very stiff and the surfaces of the glass (front and back) are dirty. I assume that the lens needs to be disassembled. Since this would be my first lens repair I need some advice. 1 - What tools and chemicals will I need (at the minimum). I ahve some rought idesa, but will need your experienced input. 2 - Regarding a grease: I have some Nye damping grease (a few different viscosities). Is this grease suitable for lenses? Nye greases: NyoGel 774 and Fluorocarbon Gel with viscosities from 50 to 112 (Pa-sec.) and 0% oil separation. 3 - If iris pivot points will be "accessible" and visible, should they be lightly lubricated, too? 4 - I started to read some repair instructions on similar lens type (Nikon) and will get familiarized a bit more. 5 - Should I even touch up the black flat paint (on the inside surfaces)? If so, what paint is suitable? Can't I just use a primer and a paint from spray cans? Â

Pyrogallol Posted 3 hours ago Share #2  Posted 3 hours ago (edited) For the stiff aperture control I use a tiny drop of WD40 around the gap between the chrome body and the black centre. I have found that it is not the aperture blades that are seized up but decades of grit between the lens body and the moving aperture control.I put a little on the tip of a feather and work the aperture control until it frees itself off. I have used the same method on Nikon rangefinder 35mm lenses. I would not repaint the black, it might just spoil the look. Welcome, dear visitor!
