Why not ask customer services at Leica?

That's certainly an option, but in my decades of experience with forums vs. official customer support channels the forums win 19 times out of 20 for expeditiousness and the amount of useful information. And companies often withhold the full story whereas forums tend to have all of it.

What is the purpose of asking? Does your CL need servicing, are you looking to buy one now, etc? Are you looking to sell the one you have before Leica service is closed out?

Most manufacturers announce when they are going to close service for a particular model, typically to their registered users if not to the public at large. I was a member of Olympus professional services at the time when they were going to close out service on the E-1 model ... They notified members, suggesting that those still using the already obsoleted model should send it in for a final CLA by such and such a date. (I took advantage of that, even though my E-1 didn't need service then nor has it needed service since... that was around a decade or so ago.)

They said six years at discontinuation, but there is a ten-year rule. I guess they'll service of as long as they have access to spare parts.

From Leica: "Unfortunately, the CL is no longer able to be serviced."

Where does that nonsense come from? Three days ago Leica CS Wetzlar mailed me that my CL was fully serviceable and I sent it in yesterday.

The mirror fell out of my Canon 5d original and I got it replaced by a third party repairer even though Canon said they couldn't help.

It seems to me that the two things most likely to fail on a CL are the viewfinder eye detection and the shutter. My question would be whether spare parts are available from other sources e.g. if the shutter is not specific to Leica.

It came from Leica headquarters.

Certainly there are other ways to have the CL repaired, if, as you say, the parts are available and the shop is willing and able to perform the service. I'm only quoting Leica's response.

Strange... I was in direct contact with Leica Wetzlar just a few days ago and they did not see any problem, as you can read from my mail ("We can still repair it"). If there is a hitch I will call one of my contacts there and inquire.

I would dearly love to know if the shutter is a generic part e.g. is it used on any Panasonic Micro Four Thirds cameras or aps cameras of other brands?

Interestingly eBay sells replacement shutters for the CL for about £100. It says the brand is Panasonic.

I replied to the email and mentioned this discrepancy and asked for clarification. Leica Germany says it can and Leica US says it can't. Perhaps the US center no longer offers service but Germany does? Even if that is the case, and I'd need to send the camera to Germany, I'd expect the US office to mention this very important fact. Their message made no hint at *any* option for repair.

We live in a time that a trade wedge has been driven between erstwhile partners. Perhaps the customs problems from dropping the de minimis rule are inhibiting the exchange of repairs between the EU and USA?

It's a global inconvenience but I'd be surprised if the trade woes would push Leica US to call off CL repairs. They're unrelated.
