noddy Posted January 10, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all Does anybody use a 50mm external viewfinder on an 111c (could be any other LTM)? I don’t have a problem with the small eyepiece, it’s just that mine does not have frame lines and I have this annoying habit of not holding the camera straight! The result, walls, horizons etc slant across the picture. Any advice would be most appreciated. Andy

I find the precision of the viewfinder very good.
luigi bertolotti Posted January 10, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 10, 2008 The VIOOH is fine but really a BIG VF, and heavy, and is not cheap. For 50 mm I have a SBOOI that is really nice: tiny but very bright, very precise frame with also a ref. for short distances, a fine leather small case that can be attached to the strap... perfect. Of course, is 50mm only... VIOOH is very valuable for it's a "zoom" 35 to 135 and even 28 with additional TUVOO that makes it a sort of modern art device
giordano Posted January 10, 2008 Share #4 Posted January 10, 2008 How about a VIDOM? The image is reversed left-to-right - which seems crazy but has the useful side-effect of making a tilted horizon much more obvious while one's framing the shot. luigi bertolotti Posted January 10, 2008 Share #5 Posted January 10, 2008 I have VIDOM too... (I love collecting VFs... ... VISOR VIDOM VIOOH RASAL WEISO SUOOQ SBOOI SEROO SHOOC... and others of course..); the point about the laterally reversed image has a sense, but the real problem, if one has as prime goal to work better than with the embedded II-III VF (IIIG stands apart) is that all the oldies (like VISOR) are less clear and the multifocals have, by nature, a rather small frame for 50 (and the VIOOH is also not so bright thanks to the prism that unreverses the image) for they all have 35 as base window. In this sense I made my advice for the SBOOI... a neat simple bright & straight 50mm VF (it was standard-provided with Leicas Ic/If/Ig) ; just for cheating, our friend Noddy could also be well satisfied with a RASUK or ROSOL (about the same for 50mm) : the clearest of all (no glass) and the metal frame is excellent for horizon straightness & C.... but frankly RASUK/ROSOL is a strange device to have mounted on the body... I admit I felt a little ridicolous when happened I used it, even if you can play with the attitudes of Neville in Greenaway's "Draughtsman' contract"....... he used a sort of MEGA-RASUK
fuchs Posted January 10, 2008 Share #6 Posted January 10, 2008 Use the SBOOI (50mm bright lines VF from Leica), or the 50mm Cosina-Voigtländer one, a clone of it. You'll see almost brighter than in real life with any of them... Ed
luigi bertolotti Posted January 10, 2008 Share #7 Posted January 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Noddy ... check Leicashop, MW Classic, Schouten : from a quick view at their sites, I saw a number of SBOOIs ranging from 85 to 140 Euros... (and personally I'm tempted by a SGOOD I saw : 85mm - rare - haven't yet it.... )
noddy Posted January 11, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted January 11, 2008 Thank you all so much. I shall have a search and look at all of the suggestions. The idea of it being small and compact also inteests me. Andy

bill Posted January 11, 2008 Share #10 Posted January 11, 2008 I'm another VIDOM man. I actually like the inversion, because it does help me to concentrate on composition when I am taking my time. It is also quite low-profile. Have to confess, though, I don't always bother with it, if using a 35 or 75 on my IIIc; I just visualise the FOV, which works well enough for my purposes 9 times out of 10. Regards. jc_braconi Posted January 11, 2008 Share #13 Posted January 11, 2008 what do you say about the price Schouten is asking for the SGOOD ? IMHO is too much because they add 20% taxes on + shipping = +/- 450 euros try to find one in USA.
noddy Posted January 11, 2008 Author Share #14 Posted January 11, 2008 Why you guys are being so helpfull, can I aks another question? well, I'll ask it anyway! I'v got a 50mm summitar and have experienced a few instances of flare. I've seen the big box like shade you can get for this lens. Are there any other makes - third party considered - that I could use instead. Or can you adapt shades used on other Leica lenses? Andy
jc_braconi Posted January 11, 2008 Share #15 Posted January 11, 2008 At this time the aperture of 2 on the Summitar 50 was got with the help of a very curved front lens, so you need a large sunshade as the one original (see the one for the Summarex above) but the front diameter and the groove allow you to use a clamp on one hood, same as for the Summicron 2:50.
